Winter XGames 2019 Insanity

Every Year Winter XGames just gets bigger

From the start XGames has been all about pushing the boundaries of action sports in a competition format. This year, watching the main events, live for once thanks to the Youtube broadcasts, I was once again blown away by the level of riding across the event. Hands down my favourite event was the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle, where Mark McMorris once again came from way down the field to post an insane last run and win his 8th Gold Medal. (See the full Slopestyle broadcast below.)

Day 1 Monster Energy Highlights

The action officially kicked off at X Games Aspen 2019 with Monster Energy athletes bringing home some new hardware! Cassie Sharpe – Women’s Ski SuperPipe, GOLD, David Wise – Men’s Ski SuperPipe, SILVER and Jamie Anderson competing in the Women’s Snowboard Big Air.

Day 2 Monster Energy Highlights

Winter X Games Aspen Day 2 was one for the books! The Monster Energy team went nuts, with Maggie Voisin – Women’s Ski Slopestyle, BRONZE, Sarah Hoefflin – Women’s Ski Slopestyle, SILVER, Casey Currie- Jeep, GOLD, Brett Turcotte – Snowmobile Freestyle, SILVER and the stand out of the day, Sven Thorgren – Men’s Snowboard Big Air, BRONZE.

Day 3 Monster Energy Highlights

Another day packed full of action at Winter X Games Aspen 2019 with Monster Energy athletes going big and landing themselves at the top! Rene Rinnekangas – Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle, SILVER, Doug Henry – Para Snow BikeCross, GOLD, Cody Matechuk – Snow BikeCross – GOLD, Alex Beaulieu-Merchand – Men’s Ski Big Air, SILVER, Men’s Ski Big Air – James Woods, BRONZE and Chloe Kim – Women’s Snowboard SuperPipe, GOLD.

All the action was red hot, but there were a few that stood out! Here are my favourites for you to watch.

The Best of XGames Minneapolis 2018

As is the norm the world’s best X athletes did not dissapoint this last week in Minneapolis. There were some incredible performances during Xgames 2018.

Skateboard

Lets start with skateboarding and Nyjah Huston. The already 7 times Gold medal winner put in a flawless performance to take home the Gold. It has been a while since his last win and was amazing to see Nyjah back to his best.

In the ladies, I was super impressed with Skateboard Park Gold winner, Brighton Zeuner. She pushed the levels of ladies park riding with a pretty impeccable run.

In men’s Park, Alex Sorgente blew minds with his variety and combinations in the park, fighting off big names like Alex Barros to take Gold.

Bmx

In the Bmx it was a mad day of riding, with the boys pushing the limits of the sport. After seeing some of these guys at Ultimate X earlier this year, I was pumped to see some of the guys were out here, dominating at XGames.

In the dirt it was Brandon Loupos with an astounding run for Gold. He had a backflip into the double backflip, then a cash rollto triple tailwhip and then the big finish of a flare doible tailwhip.

Logan Martin was one of the guys who really impressed me in SA. We did not get to see him in heavy bowl sections though, where he blew up at Bmx Park at Xgames.

James Foster stepped up the game in the Bmx Big Air with a massive superman over the jump to the first Quadruple Tailwhip in the competition.

Fmx

In the FMX the levels keep just going up, though how I just dont know. Jackson “Jacko” Strong took gold in the Fmx Best Trick with a Doube frontflip no hander.

When you open your Fmx Freestyle run with a double backflip no hander, you are going for Gold. The French heavyweight, Tom Pages smashed his second run for Gold.

Those are my top picks! remember you can go check out the full event videos on the Xgames Youtube Page with Monster Energy. Enjoy your Monday.

Winter XGames Norway Gold

The Xgames Winter edition in Norway has been going down and there have been some insane performances. Mark McMorris coming from the death to take Big Air Gold in the snowboard, Henrik Harlaut absolutely blowing away the other men in the Ski Big Air, a last run win for Sven Thorgren in the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle and then what has to be the number 1 pick, Shaun White, getting a perfect 100 score in the Super Pipe for Gold. Seriously, does this guy not stop? Enjoy the vids…

Top Ten moments of X Games Austin 2015

We wait all year for the X Games and then like a blur it is all over. Over the weekend the world’s best x athletes once again raised the level of the sports we love to watch and stoked out everyone who was up watching. For those who missed out, or for those who just want to feel the stoke again, here are my top 10 moments from X Games Austin 2015.

First up it’s my tenth spot pick and it goes to Nate Adams taking Gold in the Moto X Speed and Style. Bilko and Nate were going at it hammer and tongs and Bilko probably had him on style, but then he fell and that was that.

In ninth spot it is the ever green Bob Burnquist, who won skate big air and then went on to win the Gold in Big Air Doubles along with Morgan Wade. A new event, the crowd really enjoyed.

Up next in eighth spot, Pierre-Luc Gagnon once again dominated Skate Vert with a stylish and controlled run. PLG knows how to handle his business.

Kyle Baldock once again dominated the BMX Dirt with a super tricked out final run ending in his signature, giant front flip and makes seventh on my list.

In sixth place, it was great to see Ryan Sheckler back at X games where it all began. He skated some solid runs and ended up getting silver in Skate Street.

In 5th place its the ladies, well more specifically Alexis Sablone, with her incredible run to take Gold in the Woman’s Skate Street. Incredible to see how the level in the ladies has just gone through the roof. Alexis was doing tricks that none of the guys were.

Curren Caples had to pull out everything he had to finally put an end to the Pedro Barros domination of Skate Park. This was one of the upsets of the X games.

In Third place we head over to the Mega Ramp and a last ditch effort by Colton Satterfield to win Gold. No hand 720 Cork to double flare on the Quarter made cleanly was guaranteed to win the Gold.

In second place we stick with BMX and Daniel Sandoval going absolutely mental in BMX Park. I had to watch this run a couple of times just to make sense of how many tricks he pulled in this run.

There can only be one number one spot though and that must go to the one and only, Nyjah Huston. Watch this run a couple of times, you simply cannot find and blemishes or mistakes. It is absolutely flawless and deserving not only of the X Games Gold, but my top spot for 2015.

#ExtremeWCW Elena Hight – Snowboarding Superstar

This week I start a new weekly piece where I add a twist to the current trend of posting your #WCW (Woman crush Wednesday for the old people). I am in action sports and cover extreme athletes and there happen to be many very, very good looking ladies, who are also some of the best athletes on the planet. These ladies are deserving of our attention and respect!

What better way to start with one of the best snowboarders in the world, Elena Hight. At 13-years-old, Elena became the first female to land a 900 in competition; and in 2013, she became the first snowboarder, male or female, to land a double backside alley-oop rodeo at the Winter X Games Superpipe finals in Aspen, Colorado. She has also posed in the ESPN Naked issue, twice and by the looks of things loves hamburgers and a Braai (Ok its a gas barbecue, but us South Africans can respect a lady that cooks on flames!) Pretty good choice for a #wcw if I do say so myself.

X Games Aspen Begins – 22-25 January 2015

X Games Aspen returns to Buttermilk Mountain, January 22-25, 2015. Don’t miss the world’s most accomplished winter action sports, music and festival experience. Most eyes have been on the return of Shaun White and whether he will be able to beat out the new guard of guys like Torstein Horgmo and Marc McMorris. Follow my blog for updates on all the action!

And Check out why everyone is so excited about Shaun White returning…

All the X Games Gold 2014 from Austin, Texas

What I would have given to be at the X Games this year at it’s new home of Austin, Texas. The setups were insane, the crowds were huge and the weather was amazing. If, like me, you were unable to get there, have no fear, for I have put together a melting pot of all the best Gold Medal runs and wins. First up we have the youngest Gold medal winner in the history of the X Games. Tom Schaar is just 14 years old, but that did not stop him from beating his heros, like multiple champion, Bob Burnquist, and taking the Gold in the Skateboard Big Air…

Dam impressive it has to be said! Staying with skate and a guy I never knew much about came out and destroyed the skate vert competition to earn his first Gold medal. Jimmy Wilkins was on fire in his last run to keep Sandro Dias off the number 1 spot…

I was super stoked that they brought back BMX dirt to X Games and watching the final was pretty incredible. Kyle Baldock, throwing one of the biggest front flips ever seen, ended up with the Gold.

One man has dominated X Games Skate Street for a couple of years and this year, Nyjah Huston was on fire once again, winning his 5th X Games Gold medal. Like the commentators say, its like watching someone in a Playstation game…

Back to the Mega Ramp and Colton Satterfield pulling a no handed cork 720 to late barspin into a huge triple whip on the quarter, to win Gold on the BMX.

Onto Dirt Bikes and FMX star, Bilko, was in his first Speed and Style final against Mike Mason. Bilko with the power in the tricks was in it right to the end, but Mason throwing an underflip actually jumped his score. Mason, the veteran, showing the younger Ozzy his race experience and took the Gold from Bilko…

Almost done now and my two top Gold Medals coming up. First we had Pedro Barros in the Skate Park Final. This guys just has so much flow, combined with massive air time and it was going to be very hard to beat him. His final run was huge and he once again took the Gold!

Lastly I pay homage to a true legend of the X Games! At 42 years old, most of his peers have kids competing this days. However, Jamie Bestwick was not content with 11 X Games medals and with a run that can only be described as monumental to vert BMX, took the Gold once again!

So there you have it, the best Gold Medals from X Games 2014. Feedback from the event is that it was one of the best ever and I am certainly already looking at heading out there next year.

XGames Real Snow 2014 – Urban Chaos

A New Year and the XGames keep on growing bigger and bigger. With winter events in Aspen and Russia coming up, the first of the “real” contests begins with urban snowboarding. The competition pits 8 pro boarders against one another, but not in an event on location, but rather in a video edit battle voted for by us, the public. Just watch the teaser and be blown away by the ridiculous stunts these guys are doing.

Real Snow 2014, the X Games Aspen all-urban snowboard video-part contest, is about to begin. Online voting for the Fan Favorite award shas started at http://xgames.espn.go.com/events/2014/aspen/real/real-snow

BMX Ramp Riding on a moving Truck Trailer

Great idea this and how simple. keep seeing this overcomplicated and badly designed “super” mobile parks for demos and they all fail and take forever to set up and pack away. This is super simple and probably the best setup I have seen.

The Venezuelan Daniel Dhers, five times X-Games Gold Medalist, performed some outstanding BMX tricks on a ramp placed on top of a huge trailer in the middle of Lima´s crazy traffic.
