Steven Sawyer – The Lockdown Episode 1, WSL Longboard World Champion

Fans of the Captain Kai’s World show on, 2 Oceans Vibe Radio, have been badgering me to start up the show again. With the current Corona Lockdown, I thought it was the perfect time to start chatting with some of the world’s best action sports athletes again. So, welcome to #TheLockdown with Captain Kai. The first guest, Steven Sawyer.

Episode 1 – Steven Sawyer

I could not think of a better person for my first Episode than good friend and World Longboarding Champion, Steven Sawyer. One of the most talented surfers I know, he equally rips on a shortboard or longboard. Growing up in Jbay with a famous shaper as a Dad, he has been blessed with crazy talent both on the board and when making them, plus he is an exceptional musical talent. Hope you enjoy the first Episode.

Help Steven Sawyer & friends support the #letsFeedJbay Initiative

Help Steezy and the Jbay Pro Surfers raise money to feed the local community. Unfortunately, the current 35 day lockdown in South Africa has forced all non-essential businesses into closure and left thousands of wage earning employees in Jbay without any income. Please help us raise money that can go towards purchasing food and distributing it to those most in need.

Next Week on the Show

Coming up next week I chat with Bmx superstar, Kevin Peraza, from the States. This guy is at the forefront of Bmx and rides for Monster Energy, Vans and Mangoose Bmx. He would have been in South Africa last month for Ultimate X, if not for the Lockdown.

The People’s Champ – John John Florence

It took a few days to sink in really, that the World Title was done and dusted. It had been such a see saw year, with Matt Wilko holding on for months, then Gabriel fighting back, then John John into the lead and at the death we had, Jordy Smith, suddenly in the hunt right till the semi finals in Portugal. As a South African I would have loved to see Jordy taking the fight to Pipeline, but sitting in 3rd place he is in a great position for next year and we will take that. At the end of the day I don’t think there is a surfer on the planet unhappy right now, the most popular surfer in the world won the world title.

Lets make it plain, John John Florence is the people’s champ! More fans, more video views and more picks on Fantasy Surfer than any other guy. On top of this, the win does not just reflect on John, but on a whole family and clan of people that he travels with, lives with and adventures with. They all put so much energy and effort into what John has become that they all deserve some of the credit and the fantastic thing about it is, he gives it to them. Our new world champ is not only the best surfer in the world, but also the one with the most humility.

Congrats John! You are the man.

Brad Binder wins the Moto 3 World Championship

What a proud weekend for South African motor racing, as we got to celebrate our Heritage weekend with a new World Champion! Brad Binder conquered the Moto3™ World Championship after finishing second at the #AragonGP – he now moves with KTM into the Moto 2 championship next year and I hope he continues his meteoric rise to the top of Moto GP!

Viva Jared Houston Viva – 2015 Bodyboarding World Champion

If you were up late last night you may have noticed Jared Houston’s name popping up all over your Facebook timeline. This is not because he is such a nice guy, dashingly handsome or has loads of mates (All of which are true), but because our favorite Bodyboarder has won the 2015 APB Tour. That is right, we have a new World Champion South Africa! Jared had to sit on the beach after an early knock out in Puerto Rico. Reunion bodyboarder, Amaury Lavernhe, just had to make the Quarters to take the title, but luckily for Jared’s fingernails and our nerves, he got knocked out by an on fire Jacob Romero.

So stoked for Jared! I hope you all celebrate today and go leave our Safa champion a message – https://www.facebook.com/jaredhoustonSA/?fref=ts

Congrats Makua Rothman – Big Wave World Champion

The Big Wave World Tour did not have the best season with many of the “Jewel” events not running, but there were some crazy events and there must be a World Champion. With solid performances in the contests that did run and with one of the craziest drops in competition history, Hawaiian, Makua Rothman was named the Big Wave World Champion for 2014/15.

“We take our sport seriously and we want to be at that elite level,” says Makuakai Rothman about the world’s perception of surfers. We’re not beach bums. We train. We want to win.

And this year Makuakia Rothman wanted to win the WSL’s Big Wave Tour.

An interview with a Champion, Grant Twig Baker

I have been doing my radio show for a while now and have had some incredible interviews over the years. This interview stands out though. Twig has been through alot over the last year, but there is no bitterness, no poor old me, simply the will to be the first ever ASP Big Wave World Champion and the drive to represent for the country he loves, South Africa. Every South African, nevermind every surfer, should listen to this interview.

All hail the Champ! Mick Fanning World Champion x3

The dust has settled, the pro surfers have flown home for xmas, the Fantasy Surfer winners have lorded it over their friends and Mick Fanning is safely home in Oz with World Title number 3. This puts him on par with Andy Irons, Tom Curren and Marc Richards, with only Kelly Slater having more titles. I reckon that deserves a drink mate! Cheers Mick and bloody well done (Hope Eugene was allowed out for a celebration!)haha

Missing – A film by Taylor Steele with World Champ, Mick Fanning

Mick Fanning is busy looking for his 3rd World Title at Pipeline. If he gets it, Kelly Slater needs to win Pipe to deny him, and Mick will join an elite club of surfers , with more than 2 World Titles. Good timing then for a movie by the modern day surf film guru, Taylor Steele to come out. I am frothing to watch it! (Keep an eye out for mental SA footage!)

Taylor Steele’s brand new film – “MISSING” – puts ASP World Champion, Mick Fanning, in some of the most radical places on the planet alongside his good friends John John Florence, Jordy Smith, Matt Wilkinson and Tom Curren.

Under the direction of the world renowned film-maker, the project takes Mick Fanning out of the competition world of the ASP, gives him a boarding pass with a blank destination and for 21 days he is relocated all over the world with only a passport, suitcase and surfboard at his disposal. As a result, the surfing is special, raw and some of the best that you’ll see on screen this year. From Africa and Ireland to Central America and Spain, the experience literally is life changing for Mick Fanning.

“I was going on a trip to somewhere but I didn’t know where, kind of like being kidnapped,” said Mick Fanning.

“There was no schedule or timeline, only life. I felt like I was in the real world for the very first time and it made me so happy to see the world that clearly.”

It’s your time! Why Jordy Smith must win Trestles…

Ok, so the air festival we were all expecting has turned into the small wave carve festival and thats great, because no man alive can grind out a monster carve on a tiny wave like Jordy Smith (For that matter he has the mind boggling airs ready to go too!). Kelly And Joel have fallen, while Mick Fanning is still in with a chance in Round 5. The curve ball, Mick now faces Jordy’s mate and fellow South African, Travis Logie, who on the small rights at tiny Trestles is probably looking the most dangerous he has ever looked! So, in an ideal world we have Travis beating Mick and both South Africans go onto the finals where Jordy will win as he cannot be beaten at this point in small mushy, Dairy Bowl like Trestles. Suddenly Jordy is almost tie with Kelly and Mick and we have one banger of a World Title fight as the tour jets off to France. “Ok kai you feeling a little overconfident of your Saffas,” you naysayers will say! I answer with this statement by Jordy, “I am Psyched!” – the man is relaxed, hungry and surfing like a fleet footed ancient Greek God of surfing.
The man is on a roll and the wave is his bitch! Just check this free surf footage from before the Hurley Pro and tell me I am wrong… (Oh and Travis, its your time to bru!)
