Top 5 Web Surf Videos of 2014

With the Surfer Poll having just gone down and most sites picking their highlights for the year, I thought I would give you guys my picks for the best web surf videos over this year. There have been some absolute bangers, some that follow the old music and surf formula and the newer arty ones that mix and match between old french people smoking and John John busting. My criteria is simple, good music, great editing and surfing that gets me pumped to go session!

Before I get into the Top 5, one video worth watching in number 6 is this one, Clay on Clay by Surfing Mag. Unleashing Clay Marzo and Matt Meola on West Oz was a great idea. Maybe a little to many left handers, but the surfing and footage are insane.

Number 5 – LNF: Diamond of the Desert
With the focus on just the one spot, this video still inspires and fills with a sense of wonder. Having one of the longest tube sequences ever filmed also helps, with Koa Smith the standout.

Number 4 – Enjoy
John John Florence and filmer, Blake Kueny, have made some memorable web videos. This one definitely went arty on us, but the surfing footage and the feeling of being in France created by Blake definitely got me amped to go surf and eat baguettes.

Number 3 – The Getaway
Jordy Smith has been having a banger year and he backed it up with this sweet video shot in Mozambique. Huge gaffs, big punts and long tubes in paradise make this video a keeper.

Number 2 – Cheese 2
Noa Deane has just found himself in the cuck after some rather bad behaviour at the Surfer Poll Awards, but he still won the AI award and this video won best web video. There is a reason why, he rips and the video is shot so well with insane tunes. I almost made it number 1.

Number 1 – Dirty Dozen
Pumping track, huge moves and of course Mr Dane Reynolds. This is everything you need in a surf short and its simplicity is the winning factor. Short, sharp and to the point, make this video my winner for 2014. These are twelve of my best clips of Dane Reynolds. Filmed in Sumbawa, Japan, Hawaii, and California from 2011 – 2013, for various Marine Layer Productions projects such as Excerpt, LOADED, and Kai Neville’s Dear Suburbia.

So thats my web surf video choices for 2014. Let me know your thoughts and if I missed any good ones?

BMX Ramp Riding on a moving Truck Trailer

Great idea this and how simple. keep seeing this overcomplicated and badly designed “super” mobile parks for demos and they all fail and take forever to set up and pack away. This is super simple and probably the best setup I have seen.

The Venezuelan Daniel Dhers, five times X-Games Gold Medalist, performed some outstanding BMX tricks on a ramp placed on top of a huge trailer in the middle of Lima´s crazy traffic.

Under Desert Sun – Another Angolan sojourn…

Every year there is a new surf spot that pops up on the radar with online videos and stories hitting the zines and Magazines. Angola seems to be the new perfect surf zone for 2013. With 2 groups of South Africans already weighing in with their videos, I have been patiently waiting for this to drop from a mixed team of Euros and Dane Gudauskas. Great edit, story and some pretty cool waves.

A film about exploration and surfing in the heart of Angola. It is in the hard moments, the moments when flights are missed and bus tickets bought, food is scarce but conversation is plentiful, cars are stuck but waves are just over the next dune, that the beauty of travel becomes apparent. It is in these moments that you learn to let go, to succumb to the wills of the road, and to allow life to happen around you and take in every experience. It was days of the most arduous travel any of had ever experienced, and in a moment it was washed away with the first wave- Kevin Voegtlin

DC presents Nyjah Huston Fade to Black with Thrasher Magazine

Wanna know why this guy is considered the best street skater in the world? It is very simple, just watch this video and have your eyes blown wide. No hordes of other skaters screaming in the background, no pimp daddy I am the boss man attitude, just rock solid and utterly amazing skating to a great old track! Nyjah Huston is the Boss!

Gymkhana SIX: The Ultimate Gymkhana Grid Course

Wow, what can I actually say about this the 6th edition of Ken Block’s Gymkhana videos other than that it kicks ass, just like it’s predecessors. Literally almost a billion views over the last 5 years and in one day it already has over 2 million views on version 6. The new Need for Speed Rivals game are involved, he burns rubber around Lamborghinis, gets a soundtrack from Slayer and basically makes us all wish we were Hoonigans. Enjoy…

Silver Slipstreams – Kloof Nek Downhill Skater teams up with Mercedes

Ok, I may have been sleeping on this one. It came out while I was touring SE Asia in my defense and somehow slipped under my radar. Everyone remembers our favorite Downhill Skater who flashed the speed camera on Kloof Nek in Cape Town. Proving the power of social media and web video, he not only picked up new sponsors, a new flash white suit, but also gained enough interest for a major vehicle brand like Mercedes to play with him. I say well done to Mercedes for supporting action sports and recognizing the power our lifestyle has to amaze consumers! Great video, music and overall I am proud this is homegrown!

& Again – John John blows minds in Tahiti

Must be wonderful to have your own video making machine like John John Florence does. While you in Tahiti for the tour, you just cruize, surf and film for another mind bendingly good web short. I am pretty jealous of the camera guy to… Nice work Blake Kueny 😉

A short featuring John John Florence titled, “& AGAIN”. The sequel to AGAIN. On Location in Tahiti.

The Black and White edits – Creed McTaggart Rips

The Black & White Edits is a series of collected surf imagery featuring the EPOKHE Ambassadors.
The second edit records Creed McTaggart thrashing around Western Australia.

I like this video with old school Punk soundtrack and grainy footage. Kinda feels like the first videos I watched as a little surf punk.

The Friday Mix – Burton Backcountry, Bearclaw MTB and Mavericks with Grant Twig Baker

Prepare yourself for some Friday Awesomeness! This week on the Friday Mix we start with the new snowboarding film from Burton, Backcountry. Burton’s four-part web series [SNOWBOARDING] kicks off on 9/13 with the release of the first episode, BACKCOUNTRY. This episode takes you deep into the mountains of British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, Switzerland, and beyond. Featuring the riding of Jussi Oksanen, Terje Haakonsen, Jeremy Jones, Nicolas Müller, Mikey Rencz, and Mark Sollors, BACKCOUNTRY highlights heavy riding on massive cheesewedges, natural big mountain lines, hairy cliff drops, and soft landings.

After that I present a short web doccy on the Bearclaw Invitational. Hosted by the legendary Darren Berrecloth, the Bearclaw Invitational in Mount Washington, Canada, is the final mountain bike slopestyle contest of the 2013 season. See how the athletes thrive and survive at this contest with the final showdown on the horizon.

Lastly take a trip into the heaving waters at Mavericks with South African big wave surfer, Grant Twig Baker showing why he is one of the best in the business! The guy takes such different lines to the other surfers and really shows what the paddle potential is at one of the world’s gnarliest waves…

Moe Peters and the Bel Airedit

This guy has to be one of the hardest working and most focussed action athletes in South Africa! When you ride with Moe he is always looking for new tricks, new lines and getting the shot. His sponsors should definitely back him and send him to the States to go ride some big lines. This guy would make big name fast! In the meantime enjoy his latest web edit…
