Jack Robinson, WSL CT Rookie – #TheLockdown Ep5

#TheLockdown Ep5

Jack Robinson is ready for the Championship Tour

One of the first things we chat about on the podcast, is just how much experience Jack has already on the CT, before he even starts his career there. With numerous wildcards since his teens and surfing against most of the top guys in QS heats, he feels he has all the experience he needs to spend 20 plus years on the tour.

Staying Positive during Lockdown

With the delayed start to 2020 due to the Corona Lockdown, he stays positive at home in West Oz, where he can surf. In fact most of the waves on his doorstep make up the venues for the 3rd CT stop. He also tells me that the break, his first since he was 14, allows for some training, rest and quality time with his lady and family.

Some quality Humor

Jack has a great sense of humor and we have a couple of really good laughs over the interview. At one point, girlfriend, Julia Muniz walks from a shower, thinking its a telephone call… needless to say huge laughs around.

Jack Robinson is the most anticipated Rookie in CT history.

One thing is for sure, no surfer’s debut on the the Championship Tour has ever been this anticipated. Jack rips in all conditions. He charges the big heavy waves that would normally intimated the new comers. Hell, he has one the Volcom Pipeline Pro and is always a stand out at Teahupoo. I for one cannot wait to see him on tour.

Follow Jack and get live video from the Box and other West Oz heavy waves on his Instagram and his amazing gal Julia Muniz on her Instagram.

Huge thanks to Monster Energy for the support.

Volcom presents “The Backyard”

The North Shore Dream

As long as I have surfed, the North Shore has been the dream destination for any surfer. At the pinnacle of that dream is the a frame reef at Pipeline and Backdoor. Straddling the sands of this two wave dream is the legendary, Volcom House.

The Volcom team spend each winter here, right on the beach in front of the proving ground. They also have some of most hardened locals at Pipe and Backdoor. So, when they decide to drop an edit from the North Shore season, you know its going to be good.

At Pipeline there is flora, fauna, ocean and stone. At this point, the Volcom house is practically part of the reef at Pipeline. Between the team, the house, the family, the legacy, the legends, the peanut gallery, the respect, the parties, the Pipe Pro and the barbecues, you’d be hard pressed not to acknowledge the presence the Volcom Stone has on the North Shore, particularly at Pipe. I mean, one of the houses was built by the one and only Gerry Lopez!

Watch the Volcom Video

So sit back, try to relax and watch the team charging some rather spectacular waves.

From Flawless to Ridiculous – Volcom Pipe Pro 2016 Final Day

“Are you kidding me!” was the phrase of choice for the commentators on the final day of the Volcom Pipe Pro. After utter perfection the day before, Pipe and Backdoor were a little meaner and bigger on finals day, but there were some ridiculous performances from the likes of Jamie O’Brien, Bruce Irons, Makai McNamara and of course the winner, Kelly Slater. (All 4 made the final). Jamie’s one wave at Pipeline had Kelly quoted as saying it was the best Pipe wave he had ever seen. So sit back and watch the show…

Absolutely Flawless Pipeline – 2016 Volcom Pipe Pro Day 2

Light trade off shores, groomed lines, jumping whales and perfect pits greeted surfers on Day 2 of the Volcom Pipe Pro 2016. For those of us on the opposite end of the earth, it meant another sleepless night as we watched in awe as tube after magnificent tube were ridden. It was a truly flawless day at Pipeline with a few gems at the Backdoor. Stand out surfers were Bruce Irons, Chris Ward, Jack Robinson and of course the man who has won this event more than any other, John Florence.

In a nail biter heat, Bruce Irons (HAW) jumped from third place to first with just forty seconds left on the clock. Sitting on the Backdoor side, Irons pulled into one of the biggest right-hand barrels of the day and navigated an exit as an explosion of cheers erupted from the beach crowd. With a 9.40 score, Irons secured the heat win and a slot into Round 4.
“The conditions are as good as it gets,” said the Kauai surfer. “It’s definitely probably one of the best days of winter. Lefts, rights, 8-10 feet offshore, what more do you want?”

#WCW with hot surfers Quincy Davis & Maud Le Car

Maud Le Car finds herself home in France confined to a wetsuit to fight off the icy wind and cool water temps in Europe. While East Coast surfer Quincy Davis has yet again escaped Fall and winter to spend time on the sun soaked beaches of Puerto Rico. After a desperately cold session Maud books a life and books a flight and joins Quincy on a whim leaving a note for her boyfriend saying au revoir for now.

Kelly & John John dominate Day 3 at the Volcom Pipe Pro

Kelly Slater and John Joh Florence put on a show at Pipeline and Backdoor to firmly stamp their intentions on winning the Volcom Pipe Pro in 2015. The defending champion, Slater was in classic form, taking off deep on backdoor bombs and making impossible tubes. JJ was not to be outdone and as the swell waned later in the day he took to finishing his tubes with massive airs. SA surfer, Dale Staples, got through his Round 3 heat behind Kelly, but could not carry that momentum through Round 4.

With a pretty variable forecast, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the Volcom Pipe Pro plays out.

Bowl Anarchy at the Volcom Bowl-a-Rama 2014

Old school is definitely cool. Just take this really old school pool setup for Bowl-a-Rama mixed with some good old fashioned punk and of course insane skating. Sure as hell gets me amped. Congrats to Pedro Barros on taking home 1st, Alex Sorgente on 2nd and Danny Leon on third!

Boarding Powder in Japan with Will Jackways

There are very few things in this life that can compare to riding deep champagne powder! Japan has long been one of the top destinations for riding in deep pow pow and for good reason. With ocean on both sides and the right mountain line ups, they get fresh dumps almost every night. I could watch this video for days, but it would mean booking a ticket to Japan. Will Jackways is a great rider coming out of New Zealand and he spent the start of his winter in Powder paradise…
