Crazy First Day at the Hurley Pro Trestles

In what was to become a day of upsets, with both Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina losing to the wildcards, it was Jordy Smith and Owen Wright who put on clinics, in how to score big at Trestles. The waves were great, but there did seem to0 be a bit of a wobble and it claimed many a rail! Round 2 is as stacked as we have ever seen it with Kelly, Gabs, Taj, Kolohe, Kerr and Julian Wilson all in the round. Should make for some explosive surfing come day 2.

Hurley Pro 2013 Trestles Review – The one where I have to calm down…

Shew, ok so the holy result of Travis Logie and Jordy Smith both making a final together did not materialise and instead we got Julian Wilson, who had been killing it all comp, getting taught some lessons from the wily old bugger, haha, Taj Burrows. To be fair, he also schooled Jordy in their semi final and showed how important experience can be on the World Tour. I love Taj and his surfing and would love to see him win a World Title, which now may be a reality…

Others were not so pleased, as one Wilson fan referred to the winner as that “Bloody old fucking ozzy leprechaun!” haha

If we look at the semi finals though, the form surfers were there! The Californians may moan about Patty G and us Saffas about Travis Logie, but both lost to better surfers in their respective Quarter Finals. Great result for both though, making requalification that much more possible, especially for Travis who now sits in 19th below the bubble. Pat still has some work to do in 28th. It was a bit of an event for the underdogs really with these guys rocking, as well as Kai Otton (When did he become a small wave wizard?) and the Spartan making hay once again to the semi finals. That guy was displacing more water than the average American jumping in a pool every time he turned a rail!

Lets be honest the waves were crap! We want to see these guys at 4-6ft perfect Trestles. We got 2-3ft soft and lumpy. Its like expecting Alana Blanchard in your bed and getting Rebecca Woods. Still great, but not what you were expecting… The ASP need to come to some sort of new agreement with the powers that be about the time of year and the waiting period at Trestles. Scary to think the 2 days prior to the event were firing!

So where are we at, as we head to France in 7 days, with just 3 events left on the Tour? Kelly, Mick and Joel all faltered in this one, with Fanning taking the number 1 spot and Kelly in Number 2. Parko feels it most slipping behind Taj and Jordy to 5th. Both of these guys are within 500 points of the leaders and still very much in contention for the World Title. It means there is going to be serious pressure in France and Portugal. Personally I cannot wait! Check out the great surfing and average waves from the final day…

Hurley Pro Trestles Preview 2013

Roll right up the Circus is about to start! Trestles has to be one of the best platforms on the planet for Pro Surfing and its also at the crux of the turning point for the year on the ratings. You just know their are going to be huge performances, massive upsets and incredible shockers from the judges… Yip, I said it. Trestles has also seen some of the worst decisions by the judging panel in recent World Tour history. Remember that heat between Jordy Smith and Joel Parkinson? Jordy was pretty diplomatic about it, but the surf fans were not!

Talking about Joel and Jordy, these 2 guys have to be the high on the list of favorites for the win. Both surf the long peeling right handers like magicians and both are focussed on Kelly Slater and the World Title. If Jordy is surfing like he has been in the free surfs leading up to the event though, I don’t think anyone will beat him (The judges also have the spectre of “That” result in the back of their minds which may work to Jordy’s advantage.) Kelly Slater is the man in the number 1 vest though and no mere mortal will unseat the king at the venue where he has pretty much made his name! He was showing chinks at Teahupoo though and he may finally be feeling his age…

Julian Wilson has found his rhythm again and will definitely be a good call for Trestles on your Fantasy team. Just check the photo above and realise how dangerous he can be out there. Also expect to see the Brazzas make a firm statement at Trestles. Medina, Pupo, Da Souza, Muniz and the young gun, Felipe Toledo will all be danger men at Trestles. These guys have the punts, they have previous wins at the cobblestone point and right now they need results!

My dark horse call for Trestles, Michel Bourez. He just fell short at Keramas and will be just as devastating on the right walls at Trestles! The Spartan could seriously upset the cart. Oh and lets not forget Mick Fanning and John John Florence. So good luck picking your team people, this one is wide open and if the waves deliver we could see some of the best surfing seen in competition. Think John John’s air in Bali and the ultimate dark horse, Dane Reynolds’ turn at Haleiwa last year! I am amped…

Wow, Dane is back. I am giddy with excitement.

Dane Reynolds – Dear Suburbia Mashup!

I love a good mashup! From music to surf videos, it’s a great way to to revisit your favorites. With this in mind I was stoked to come across this great mashup of Dane’s surfing from Kai Neville’s film, Dear Suburbia. It also has an amazing track! With Dane confirmed as a wildcard for the ASP World Tour event at Trestles later this month, this video will remind all why he is going to be very, very dangerous in that lineup!
