The awards for the most mental surfers on the planet approaches and these are the nominees for the Ride of the Year. While Brad Domke is pretty spectacular on his finless wonder, I think it is a 2 horse race between Shane Dorian, that drop at Puerto is crazy, and Dean Morrison, as if we are remembering it is the “Big Wave” awards and his wave at the Right is absolutely insane. I will be posting the awards nominees during the day and week.
The idea was brilliant. Send two surfers – one of the world’s best in big waves, and one of the world’s best all-around – for a massive swell at an incredibly dangerous surf spot, get them to catch the same wave, shoot a photo and you’re done. Just like that, you’ve got the most interesting — and coincidentally, the most dangerous — surf image ever taken. On Friday, August 1st, a photo that had to that point only been a dream, suddenly turned to reality.
Ryan Hipwood almost died surfing The Right in 2012, but decided he wanted to conquer his fear and this deadly wave. Together with Mark Mathews and Dean Morrison and an assorted crew of charges, they went back out into the West Oz Ocean to charge what they call a “perfect Day” and we mortals call simply lunatic!
