Matt McGillivray is a man on a Mission

The Jbay local, Matt McGillivray, started his year winning a QS 3000 in Israel and he has his sights firmly fixed on the World Tour. Having current SA star, Jordy Smith’s, dad in his corner seems to be helping. Graham Smith shapes Matt‘s surfboards and they look like magic carpets under the young man’s feet.

The Story of the 44

The board was designed for Stab Magazine’s, Stab in the Dark. A video project where Jordy Smith got to take a number of unmarcked boards to test in perfect waves. One of his favorites was the number 44 Surfboard, which he broke after loving it. Only after the results were done, did he find out it was shaped by his dad. It is now one of Gforce Surfboards most popular models.

Matt has Jbay in his DNA

Growing up on the groomed right pointbreaks of Jbay has given Matt a real power base in his surfing. I was lucky enough to shoot with him over the Jbay Open, he was a wildcard, and further up the SA coast a bit later in the year. This video is from around 3 hours of shooting, pretty impressive stuff.

RVCA Rolling Retro Presented By El Jimador Tequila Shares Date With World Margarita Day.

Llandudno, Cape Town – in a somewhat serendipitious twist of fate, the date set for the 2015 instalment of the RVCA Rolling Retro, is also the same day as the global Margarita Day. Continuing along the serendipity theme, the presenting sponsor of the RVCA Rolling Retro surf tournament is none other than El Jimador tequila.

The good people from El Jimador are also the people behind the Agave Surfboard project, initiated last year to great success. See the project video clip:

With so much happening on the 22 February, on what is bound to be a hot summer’s day, there’s also the possibility that there might be a few sneaky frozen margaritas on sale at the event. Remember that funds from the event go to the Llandudno Surf Life Saving Club.

Tom Curren talks Style, Competitive Surfing and Jbay

The man is a legend! He redefined performance at Supertubes on his first wave ever at the point and when he paddled out for his ASP Heritage heat against Occy, he showed the World once again how good he is. Arcing turns, drawn out bottom turns and a perfect ten tube ride. It was a huge privilege to get to interview the man who inspired me to surf Jbay as a grom. His thoughts on surfing Jbay and what he thinks of Owen Wright, Matt Wilko, Joel Parkinson and of course Mick Fanning may just change your views on these surfers. RVCA Rolling Retro 2014 – Round up and Video

I am not going to wax lyrical to much here, but my God Rolling Retro truly is the best day of the year. Every year just gets better and better. We were blessed with great weather, insane waves and a crowd of people from kids to oldies intent on having the best day they could together. Big thanks to everyone who supported the event!
