Snowboarding Game changes at the Burton US Open

Wow! I mean wow! Did you watch the Burton US Open and did you see with your own eyes how the game was changed forever? First off we had Taku Hiraoka and the rest of the Halfpipe squad going absolutely mental. But the big show had to go to the new phenom, Yuki Kadono in the Slopestyle event. Marc McMorris was his usual incredible self, but even he could not stop Yuki from winning, when the kid was dropping back to back 1620’s. Watch his run and realise that Pro Snowboarding has just gone up a level once again. Then watch the finals highlights from both the Halfpipe and Slopestyle and be amazed by the level across both the women’s and men’s events. Simply blows my mind!

X Games Aspen – Top 5 Moments 2015

So another X Games has past and the levels as per every year just keep getting higher. There were some ridiculous moments in 2015, in Aspen and I bring you my choices for the top moments.

First up in the ladies Superpipe the battle was between Lindsey Jacobellis and 14 year old, Chloe Kim. Jacobellis has dominated the sport for years and when Chloe had one of the biggest falls of the night, most thought the Gold was out of her grasp. But the youngster put on her fighting gloves and came back to win the Gold and become the youngest Gold Medal athlete in X games history.

Staying in the Pipe but in the men’s ski final, it was the first win from a Canadian by, Simon D’Artois. The guy was clearing 21ft out of the Superpipe and hitting double corks like they were straight airs.

In the Ski Big Air it was young rider, Vincent Gagnier, who blew minds with his top 2 runs. This guy was stoked because he made 2 tricks he had never done before in competition.

The top 2 moments belong to one man, Marc McMorris. This guy is riding on another level! In the Snowboard Big Air, he pulled first a frontside triple cork 1440 and then stepped it up with a backside 1620 triple cork. The commentators were actually speechless.

After blowing everyone’s minds in the Big Air, McMorris moved onto the Slopestyle, where he once again stepped up the performance levels to claim his second Gold of the X Games. With a flawless rail game and progressively huge airs, he stepped up the game.

These were by no means the only highlights of a once again incredible winter X Games. Check out the X games rollout video for the biggest moments of 2015. The focus will now turn to summer and X Games Austin in early June.

X Games Day 1 – Snowboard Halfpipe Insanity

Ok so the first day of X Games Aspen is behind us and what a day it was. There was snowmobile action, Ski Slopestyle, Ski Halfpipe and probably the most anticipated event of the year, the men’s Snowboard Pipe. All eyes were on the return of the flying tomato, Shaun White, but it was the youngsters who held him back and he finished in 3rd. Taka Hiraoka from japan busted some solid tricks with incredible elevation to secure silver. Repeating his victory from last year, it was Danny Davis winning the Gold. I loved Danny’s run, great mix of old and new and especially the monster McTwist to start.

I have watched this series from the first film, Deeper, where Jeremy changed backcountry snowboarding for ever, by pushing the limits of where you could go, stay and ride. Now in the final installment, Jones and his crew are going deeper, further and much, much higher for the third and final installment of this incredible snowboard journey.

The Winter Whip Snowboard contest at Afriski – presented by LW Mag

This is the first time in over 10 years that I have missed the annual snowboard contest in South Africa. I am pretty damn bleak about it, especially watching the video and realising what a great weekend the boys and gals had. People are always amazed when I talk about snowboarding in Africa, but the bottom line is that if you wanna ride a fun park, you don’t need to travel abroad! Even world famous web boarder and pro, Marko Grilc, was impressed, just see his video below the comp one.

Night Rider Snowboarding

It’s lights out for Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew! As the 2014 season winds down, the goal is to keep snowboarding past the daylight hours and Dave has just the solution—a snowboard with headlights. The crew fashion a custom board with dedicated mounts at the factory to accommodate a variety of LED Lenser flashlights and lamps. Then comes the fun part, the crew travel up North to Baldface Lodge and test out these night riding boards in epic deep powder conditions. This is what happened while you were sleeping!
