Rolling Retro – Digital Edition 2021

With the cancelation of so many events over the last 18 months, including the Rolling Retro at Llandudno Beach, the organizers decided to revive the event with a special digital edition in 2021. This year Rolling Retro are inviting surfers from across South Africa, to film themselves with their Retro Surfboards. The organizers want to see the old boards and hear their stories. Rolling Retro, organizer, Captain Kai,

“It was heartbreaking to cancel the event in 2020 just a week before we were supposed to run it. Robby and I could not face another year of inactivity. So, we decided to go out there and get everyone in the SA surfing community involved. This year anyone can submit clips of their boards and some surfing on them, to win incredible prizes.”

So, dust off those Retro boards, Logs, handguns, waveskis, Kneeboards, Bodyboards and tell Rolling Retro their stories, why you love them and show them off on a few waves. Rolling Retro have some epic prizes for their favorites, including a trip to the 2022 Rolling Retro at Llandudno (The event is almost guaranteed to run in 2022.)

Cape Town gets ready for Rolling Retro Surfing Celebration

Rolling Retro 2018

Best Surfing event of Year

The longest running Retro surfing event in the world, Rolling Retro, is back for its 9th year. Every year the Cape Town surfing fraternity come out to surf a surfboard from the incredible collection, owned by Robby McDonald of Vudu Surf, enjoy a day on the beach with family and friends and to enjoy the old school music and beach party vibes. Rolling Retro helps to raise funds for the Llandudno Lifesaving Club (Remember to bring cash, as food and bar available.)

One of the best retro Surfboard Collections in the World

One of the biggest attraction for all surfers is the incredible collection of retro surfboards, that are brought out once a year, for the event. During the year, these boards, a huge part of South Africa’s surfing heritage, are kept in storage. Robby and partner, Kai Linder (Captain Kai in SA surfing circles) decided to start the event so that their friends and the local surf community could see, touch and surf these incredible pieces of history, while having a good time and helping raise funds. Rolling Retro quickly grew into the local communities most popular day of the year.

Surfers from all Cape communities and even further abroad descend onto the beach each year to enter the event. Every entrant gets to pick a surfboard from the collection and surf a 30 minute heat with 9 other people in the water. It is important to note that the event is not a competition, but rather a celebration of surfing and its heritage, so there are no judges and no finals such as normal competitions. Instead Captain Kai and fellow MC, Ilan Sheer, choose prize winners from a range of categories through the day, all awarded during the jubilant prize giving.

This year the event sees the following divisions:

– Surfing

– Log (Ancient Single fin craft)

– Bodysurfing

– Bodyboard

– Kneeboard

Prizes Categories:

– Best Surfer (Male)

– Best Surfer (Female)

– Best grom

– Best Bodysurfer

– Best Longboarder

– Best Tube

– Best Dressed (Male & female)

– Instagram winner x 3

– plenty give aways and throw outs

All ages are welcome and some heats see fathers, sons and daughters surfing together – another unique aspect of the event. Once the surfing is done and prizes awarded, the music starts and the day is finished by an old school sunset beach party. This year the theme of the event is the Reggae Revival and sees Reggae MC, Crosby and his Rasta DJ. Thirsts will be quenched by Presenting Sponsor, Striped Horse beer, Red Bull and the party vibe cultivated by local tequila manufacturer, Leonista. Prizes are sponsored by Billabong, Hurricane Surf, Skullcandy, Von Zipper and Vudu Surf. The event is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa.

Registration starts at 8am with the first heats in the water at 9am. The day is finished with the annual Pro Heat, showcasing some of SA’s top surfers and a crew of the best local surfers from Llandudno (Around 5pm). This year will include multiple best surfer, Michael Grendon, current SA Champ, Brandon Benjamin, as well as last year’s best surfer, Dale Staples.

Due to the nature of surfing, there is provision for an alternate date, if the weather does not play ball. The final call is made on Wednesday 28th February.

Date: Sunday 4 March 2018

Backup Date: Sunday 18 March 2018

– Llandudno has minimal parking available and you don’t need to bring your own surfboards, so we highly advise using a taxi service to and from the event. PLEASE DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!

Rolling Retro 2016 presented by El Jimador – Get ready for Baja Magic!

Cape Town’s favorite day of sun, fun and surf returns for it’s 6th year. Once again Vudu Surfboards will be holding the #RollingRetro at Llandudno Beach, with a large collection, of over 45 Retro surfboards, available for entrants to surf in celebration of our surf heritage. Our presenting sponsor, El Jimador, will be keeping the party going and the frozen margaritas flowing, while this year we are joined by everyone’s favorite Mexican beer, Corona! In line with our sponsors, this year the #RollingRetro will have a classic “Baja” theme and we invite everyone to find their inner Mexican.

The event was conceptualised by Vudu Surf’s, Robby McDonald and South Africa’s premier extreme sport MC, Captain Kai. The guys wanted to create an event that celebrated SA surfing history and also gave back to the local Llandudno community. Robby has one of the biggest Retro surfboard collections in the country and once a year, at the event, people can experience these rare surfboards for themselves.

The event also helps to raise funds for the Llandudno Lifesaving Club, as they supply all the Food, including veg options, and along with the Bar, helps raise money for the club to attend the SA National Champs. (So remember to bring your cash down as no ATM on the beach. Please remember no alcohol or glass on the beach.)

Remember, its not a competition but a celebration! Groms, ancient surf masters, girls and guys all surf together in 10 person heats that last 30 minutes. The MC’s, Ilan Sheer (Llandudno Local), Andrew “Roosta” Lange (Free surf Guru) and Captain Kai will keep the crowd entertained and informed. Retro tunes will play throughout the day with the Vinyl masters, Roasting Records and DJ Ike on the decks, while the Larter Bros, who have played at every #RollingRetro will play after the prize giving.

Getting Tubed in 2014 (Pic- Richard Johnson)

The main event of the day each year, is the “Pro Heat” with special guest surfers putting on a show, ably led by Roosta. This year we will have multiple #RollingRetro winner, Mike Grendon (SA Champ Longboarder) back in the water, along with multiple World Champion Longboarder, Mathew Moir, and big wave surfing legend, Chris Bertish. Local standouts, Jasper Eales, Josh Brodie and super grom, Luke Slijpen will be joining them for the last heat of the day. A few more surprises are definitely in store.

This year we once again celebrate our water brethren, with both Bodysurfing and Bodyboarder heats in the mix. Vudu Surf will supply custom made hand guns for the Bodysurfing entrants to use and the best Bodysurfer on the day will win one of these custom weapons. We are also looking for the best retro board, whether surf, bodyboard or Handgun, so make sure you bring your toys to the beach.

The #RollingRetro cannot happen without our sponsors. In 2016 the event is presented by
El Jimador Tequila, with main sponsors Vudu Surf, Corona and Red Bull. Our prize sponsors are Von Zipper, Hurricane Surf and Gul Wetsuits.
