Welcome Elsewhere – Craig Anderson Short Film

Mr Casual returns with another Kai Neville creation. Craig Anderson has to be the most understated surfer, but when he gets in the water it is all style and flare. Watch this film and glory in the flashbacks to another era, mixed with the most modern of maneuvers.

Craig, “Driving across Australia. Hunting uncrowded waves. I like how hard the spots are to get too. I like being mysto in the desert. I like being in the jungle.”

#Movember #OfftheLip surf jam with Quiksilver

Every year the Durban surf community get together for a good cause and meet for the day at Bean Bums for the Quiksilver Off the Lip surf jam in aid of Movember. This year had a great turn out, with good vibes all day. The waves were not the best or safest, but everyone had fun. Congrats to Brandon Jackson on taking the win in the men, Kirsty Delport in the ladies and of course the legend JJ in the masters.

A Smorgasbord of South African Surfing

There has been a flurry of activity online this week with a couple of surfing edits dropping from some of South Africa’s top surfers. What better way to remind yourself how good the waves are at home and what quality surfers we have here, than by watching these videos with Josh Redman, Dylan Lightfoot, Slade Prestwhich, Shane Sykes, Dan Redman, Brandon Jackson and Ricky Basnett. Well done to the guys behind the cameras too, we need more footage infiltrating the world wide web.

#OfftheLip Movember Retro Surf Day

A good cause backed up with a great event. The #OfftheLip Retro surf day with Quiksilver aimed to raise funds for Movember while putting on a fun day for the crew in Durban. I was lucky enough to fly up as an ambassador for Movember and had a great time. There were plenty of great Mo’s on offer and most people had made an attempt to dress up. Gorgeous Bikini girls walked around raising cash for a raffle and Kirsty Delport sported a Mo to shame the boys! Ryan Bisset looking like a 70’s policeman from Poffadder took third place, with big wave man, Grant Twig Baker, impressing in the smaller stuff for once and taking 2nd. The man with the only actual retro hairstyle took it though with incredible surfing on an old Mark Richards Twin, showing up all the old ballies. Mikey February won the event and took home an amazing Twin Fin Surfboard from Quiksilver. I walked away with a devastating Farmer Tan and a great big hangover. Movember promise to do the event again in 2014 with an additional day promised for Cape Town. Great video of the day by Steve Michelson…

Slade Prestwich – SA’s new Power Surfer

The kid has been making name this year, especially when he went out and won the Volcom Pro Junior at Cloudbreak in front of a global web audience. I have been lucky enough to spend some time with Slade this year and I can tell you 3 things about him. First, he is a really nice guy and very polite. Second, he is a big boy! Third, he surfs like a man possessed while at the same time looking like a highly surgical surfer. Bonus information – the Dolls love him! haha The Moms and ladies at all the Junior events this year literally swoon for him. So put that all together and I reckon you may just have been introduced to a future Champion!

Get ready for the North Shore!

All eyes turn to the North Shore of Hawaii next week as the Triple Crown of Surfing begins and the World Tour of surfing descends on Oahu. Outside of the winning the World Title, the Triple Crown is probably the most prestigious trophy in surfing and has been won by the best of the best. With 3 events spanning a month long period, it will put surfers to the test, from high performance Haleiwa, to monster outside Sunset and of course the caverns of Pipeline and Backdoor. Defending Triple Crown Champ, Sebastien Ziets will be wanting to defend his title for Hawaii, but annual stars like Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Jordy Smith will be looking for that title, as well as the World Title. All the players and scenarios are in place for an epic showdown. Follow all the drama – http://www.vanstriplecrownofsurfing.com/

On the back of this, the invites for the Quiksilver in memory of Eddia Aiku Big Wave contest have gone out and Grant Twig Baker is on that prestigious list! With the waiting period stretching over the whole North Shore winter we can only hope that this year the spirit of Eddie will arrive and we can once again watch the beautiful chaos that is the Bay! Quiksilver Pro France 2013 Preview – Watch Live

Bam, straight back into action and the World Tour battle is alive and well! Mick Fanning and Kelly Slater have a slight gap out in front, but Jordy Smith and Parko are in the hunt with Taj Burrows closing with his win at Trestles. Kelly and Mick have both had success in France before, but after his performance in similar beachbreak in Rio this year, watch out for Jordy Smith.

Dane the dark horse is back. He had a disappointing run in California, but you can never count the guy out. Another guy to keep an eye on will be Gabriel Medina. A past winner in France, he has had a quite one this year, but never for a minute think he is out of it. Julian Wilson is hot property right now, especially after a great run at Trestles. Many thought he would win in California and he will want to keep his roll going.

All in all we should be looking at one hell of a contest, with everything to win or lose for the top 8 surfers and the guys bringing up the rear realising they need a result now with just 3 events remaining.

Dane Reynolds – Dear Suburbia Mashup!

I love a good mashup! From music to surf videos, it’s a great way to to revisit your favorites. With this in mind I was stoked to come across this great mashup of Dane’s surfing from Kai Neville’s film, Dear Suburbia. It also has an amazing track! With Dane confirmed as a wildcard for the ASP World Tour event at Trestles later this month, this video will remind all why he is going to be very, very dangerous in that lineup!

The Friday Mix – Surf Dreaming, Steph Gilmore shreds Mex & BMX in China

This week in your mix we go a little surf heavy! Check out Dave Richards new web edit, Border Run, as he dreams of perfect waves while stuck on Dubai, but ends up scoring on a border run to the Maldives.

Next up Stephanie Gilmore takes us on a jaunt down south of the border in Mexico and absolutely destroys every wave in sight! There is a reason this fine looking lady is a multiple world champion! Love me some shredding in bikinis…

Lastly we join good ginger, Greg Illingworth on a trip to China, filming for the new Bmx film, Make it Happen. The boys found some crazy lines and weird things as you would expect in the land of weird…

Snow in Africa feels Backwards – A Quiksnow Interpretation…

It does feel like we are doing it all backwards sometimes here in Lesotho. Most people would never believe there is a Resort for snow in Southern Africa, never mind a fully fledged and competitive Park. But the truth of the matter is, there are! Here is a really cool little video by my man Lebogang of this year’s SA Snowboard Champs…
