Thando – An Inspiring Film based on a former Street Kid

I have to say, especially knowing the young man this is based on, I was really touched by the sincerity and honesty of this short film. Made by Calvin Paul Thompson, Thando, tells the story of a young boy, Thando, growing up in the township, who loves the ocean. His father introduced him to this magical place, but after he dies, the kids life spirals down a path many in the informal settlements end up experiencing.

Drugs, crime and violence become reality, resulting in Thando running away from home and becoming a street kid, at an age where most children cant go to the shops on their own. But, there is a positive message to be taken from this story and I only hope that, Calvin gets more funding, to complete the full story.

Interview with the Filmmaker

I asked Calvin if it was indeed ispired by former street kid and pro surfer, Ntando Msibi?

Calvin:  I know you’ve had your own relationship and experience with Ntando, so it’s cool to talk to you about this. The film’s storyline is entirely based on Ntando Msibi yes. He was going to feature in the final scene but unfortunately I couldn’t organise to shoot it before the DIFF submission date closed. So he wasn’t really directly involved in the actual production, but we always spoke about making a narrative based on the stories he’d tell me about growing up in Kwamashu and running away from home. And I wrote the script based off notes I made talking to him at the surf project years ago

I really wanted to know if there will be a sequel, that continues the story of Thando, from the streets to becoming a Pro Surfer?

Calvin: Yes I’d like to make a sequel/follow up if I can raise funds for a decent production, I’d love to do another film with Surprise acting – he’s a real champ and a dream to work with bru.

Surprise is one of my favorite little groms from Durban! He has just started competing too and expect some big results from him in the future.

Lastly I asked Calvin why he made this project?

Calvin: My friendship with Biggy, combined with my my keenness for filmmaking I guess, is what made me wanna make the film in the first place. I wanted to make a story that had some truth and meaning, rather than just for the sake of fancy visuals and effects etc. I wanted to put people in the shoes of Ntando for a few minutes, and see how it must have been growing up for him. This short film obviously didn’t have the space to do that justice, but it gives the audience a taste at least. Getting to the truth behind Ntando’s back story became a fascination of mine while getting to know him, because everyone’s always had their own version and opinion on it, so when I finally sat him down in like 2015 and got some real facts straight from him, turning it into a film was inevitable I guess.

Bromdog’s Risky Business – Watch Now

I watched this film and simply marvelled at how how big Bromdog’s balls actually are! He is not afraid to go over the ledge in big waves and thus this short film deserves your time…

Step out of your comfort zone; explore new places, meet new people and throw all caution to the wind – you never know where you’ll land up! Risky Business is all about putting yourself out there, and the rewards found at the end of the road less travelled.

Risky Business captures the journey of South African surfer Matt Bromley and filmer Guy Macindoe while they travel to some of the riskier places on earth in their pursuit of surf perfection; from surfing between icebergs in Iceland, to charging massive mountains of water at Jaws in Hawaii, to dropping into near-dry tubes over unforgiving ledges in Africa. The idea was to produce a contemporary surf film, one that showed the risks behind the reward of chasing global swells on a shoe string budget, all the while living every surfers dream for a year between South Africa, Europe, Hawaii, Iceland and Indonesia. The hope is that Risky Business will inspire its audiences to stretch the boundaries of their own capacity, flee their comfort zones, and chase all things bigger and better. Matt and Guy both stretched themselves to make this film a reality; traveling in debt and in fear of not knowing what was around the next swell. All their equipment was stolen in Portugal and they suffered many other hardships along the way, but as Matt reports, “It was worth every moment of risk, and made the journey and experience that much more unforgettable.”

If there is one documentary every surfer on the planet is waiting to watch, it has to be this one. Andy Irons was a force of nature – Wild, unrelenting and unpredictable, but his surfing was a thing of beauty! He had a massive impact on the world of professional surfing, going from the wild child to a three time world champion and becoming Kelly Slater’s greatest rival at a time when no one could compare to the 9 time world champ. When you see the emotion from everyone in this film you realise how much Andy effected theirs and our lives. This one is going to be an emotional roller coaster!

I have known Frank Solomon a long time. He is a good gent, the ladies love him and he is really, not scared at all, of massive, scary waves! So I am stoked that his new feature, with the team at Red Bull Media House, is launching this month and I am even more stoked I get to go watch the premier. This guy hangs out with the likes of John John Florence, Jamie O”Brien and Ben harper, so you can be sure of some serious surf action, great music and even comedy and laughs thanks to guys like Cokey Falkow and all Frank’s mates. Oakley Wave of the Winter 2015 Movie

Every winter on the North Shore, Surfline run the “wave of the winter” contest. Through video submission, surfers enter their best waves surfed along the North Shore over the winter for a $25’000 first prize. This season saw some crazy entries, but it was Mason Ho and Jamie O’Brien who fought it out for first place, both with crazy waves at Pipeline. Check out what happened…

Goose bump inducing Downhill Skate Movie – And it’s Free!

The crew at Arbor have a solid track record of great movies, whether Snowboarding or Downhill Skating. So I was pretty dam excited to watch their latest Downhill piece, Grade.

Caliber Truck Co. and Arbor Skateboards, in association with Blood Orange, present GRADE; a downhill/freeride full-length film chronicling a year of travel with our top team riders. Tag along with James Kelly, Liam Morgan, Tyler Howell, Brandon Tissen, and Jordan Riachi as they travel to some of the most critical and challenging roads in the world. GRADE was filmed on location in Mexico, Hawaii, Northern Sierras, Laguna Beach, Australia, and Switzerland.

There are moments watching this film that I was literally breathing hard and clutching the armrests on my chair. You can almost feel the adrenaline shooting through the riders veins with every wobble and vehicle drive by. I highly recommend watching it!

KERRZY – The new Josh Kerr Movie

He whips it, throws huge and creative airs and charges monster tubes. Yip, its time for the Josh Kerr movie and I am amped. His last film was incredible and on top of the surfing, it had one of the best soundtracks ever. When you have Taylor Knox and Kelly Slater talking you up in the trailer, you know you good, haha.
