Win a Nixon Watch – The Regular Guy Season 1

Watch Season 1 of The Regular Guy

The concept was simple, create a surfboard review show that was relevant to the every day, normal surfer. At 42, weighing 110kg and being a good, but certainly not a pro surfer, I was the perfect candidate. If a board goes well for me, it will more than likely go well for you! Plus who else but Captain Kai knows the whole of the SA Surf Scene.

It is simple, in order to win the Nixon Tide Watch or one of two Hurricane Grips, you need to have watched Season 1, of the Regular Guy. Then you take the survey below (It will take 3 minutes) and make sure you follow both Captain Kai and Nixon on Instagram.

Season 1 of The Regular Guy was filmed over 10 days at Supertubes, Jbay and I tested six surfboards from some of SA’s finest board makers. The brief was simple, send a board that would make surfing big winter, swells easier for the average surfer. The surfboard must paddle really well, have a high performance level and, of course, suit a surfer weighing 110kg and 42 years old, myself.

If you have not watched all the episodes, here you go:

Now, do the survey!

The survey will take 3-5 minutes and will help me improve Season 2, so that you, the viewer, get more out of the surfboard reviews. Make sure you follow Captain Kai and Nixon on Instagram! Winner announced 18 October 2020!

Support the Shapers and Sponsors!

This whole series would not have been possible without the featured board makers and of course my sponsors. So please show them some love.

Accommodation was provided by AtSupers and we were styling in Pepper St, just meters from the paddle out at Supers (Also the best breakfasts of my life!)

We ate like kings thanks to Jbay’s home away from home, Ninas Real Food.

All my board bags, leashes and grips were supplied by Hurricane Surf.

All my fins were supplied by Scarfini.

I know the tides and sunrise and sunset every day thanks to my Nixon Tide Pro.

The six surfboards were from:

Channel Islands, Twig Surfboards, Dutchie Surf Designs, Gonzo Shapes, SMTH Shapes and Mat Surfboards.

Steven Sawyer – The Lockdown Episode 1, WSL Longboard World Champion

Fans of the Captain Kai’s World show on, 2 Oceans Vibe Radio, have been badgering me to start up the show again. With the current Corona Lockdown, I thought it was the perfect time to start chatting with some of the world’s best action sports athletes again. So, welcome to #TheLockdown with Captain Kai. The first guest, Steven Sawyer.

Episode 1 – Steven Sawyer

I could not think of a better person for my first Episode than good friend and World Longboarding Champion, Steven Sawyer. One of the most talented surfers I know, he equally rips on a shortboard or longboard. Growing up in Jbay with a famous shaper as a Dad, he has been blessed with crazy talent both on the board and when making them, plus he is an exceptional musical talent. Hope you enjoy the first Episode.

Help Steven Sawyer & friends support the #letsFeedJbay Initiative

Help Steezy and the Jbay Pro Surfers raise money to feed the local community. Unfortunately, the current 35 day lockdown in South Africa has forced all non-essential businesses into closure and left thousands of wage earning employees in Jbay without any income. Please help us raise money that can go towards purchasing food and distributing it to those most in need.

Next Week on the Show

Coming up next week I chat with Bmx superstar, Kevin Peraza, from the States. This guy is at the forefront of Bmx and rides for Monster Energy, Vans and Mangoose Bmx. He would have been in South Africa last month for Ultimate X, if not for the Lockdown.

Make It – The fresh surfing of Joshe Faulkner

Hailing from Jbay, Joshe has a deadly backhand attack!

Joshe Faulkner has a deep well of Talent

Joshe Faulkner grew up in Jbay and has honed his talent in the competitive lineups and on the strong South African junior series. Some big results over the years, but it is watching him free surf where you really gain perspective on how deep his talent runs. This is why I asked Billabong to give me some time with him to film and boy am I glad I did.

The Kid seems Quiet

When you need Joshe he comes off as this super quiet and reserved human. But travelling with him for two weeks I got to find out he is pretty sharp, has a dark sense of humour and once he feels comfortable around you he actually loves a chat. The main thing I learnt about him though, is that he literally loves surfing more than anything else. He will surf for hours, as in 6 hour session, come out and eat and go straight back in for another few hours.

Make It is just the start

This is our first project working together, but plans are already in motion for a bigger and more radical film to be shot this year. So watch this space, give the young man a follow on social – Joshe on Instagram – and I will keep you posted as we look to make the best free surfing film out of South Africa ever!

In the meantime enjoy this, our first project together…

Driven – Jbay Surfer Matt McGillivray is on Fire

Matt, Jbay and his trusty 44 GForce!

Matt McGillivray is a man on a Mission

The Jbay local, Matt McGillivray, started his year winning a QS 3000 in Israel and he has his sights firmly fixed on the World Tour. Having current SA star, Jordy Smith’s, dad in his corner seems to be helping. Graham Smith shapes Matt‘s surfboards and they look like magic carpets under the young man’s feet.

The Story of the 44

The board was designed for Stab Magazine’s, Stab in the Dark. A video project where Jordy Smith got to take a number of unmarcked boards to test in perfect waves. One of his favorites was the number 44 Surfboard, which he broke after loving it. Only after the results were done, did he find out it was shaped by his dad. It is now one of Gforce Surfboards most popular models.

Matt has Jbay in his DNA

Growing up on the groomed right pointbreaks of Jbay has given Matt a real power base in his surfing. I was lucky enough to shoot with him over the Jbay Open, he was a wildcard, and further up the SA coast a bit later in the year. This video is from around 3 hours of shooting, pretty impressive stuff.

Enjoy the Video

Meet Mr Multi Talent – Steven Steezy Sawyer

Steven Steezy Sawyer is an incredibly talented young guy. Whether strumming the strings with making soulful tunes, winning national longboard titles or coming up against the best in the world at the Jbay Open, he always impresses. He is one of my favorite guys to watch on the longboard and now he is learning the craft of making surfboards from his legend, old man, Des Sawyer. Have a watch, get to know Steezy better and help a young gun out by sharing this post!

This is a short clip of Steezy, jamming music, shaping boards, surfing and talking about 2016’s festivities.

Special thanks to Grant Beck of (Pineapple Productions) for the interview and editing of the clip
Jonathan Mcgillivray, for the drone footage
Cara Sawyer, for the surfing footage

Jbay Supertrial Highlights – Steven Sawyer Wins

I cant tell you how stoked I am for my guy, Steven Steezy Sawyer. The kid has been on a serious roll, with the release of his first album, which rocks, winning the SA Longboard Title earlier this year and now he takes out the Jbay Supertrial against a stacked field of the best SA Supers rippers. I am also stoked because I know Steezy can cause havoc in the Jbay Open, he won the wildcard, and I promise you the top boys will be very nervous! Nice to see the old boy, Shaun Holmes in the final and still ripping the place apart. Check out this cool video of the day with an even cooler soundtrack…

3 Videos that may change how we surf!

One of the most oft spoken about topics for many years in surfing has been, where are we going? What is the next big thing in surfing? How will our sport progress?

Below are three short videos that will go some way to answering that question. Kelly Slater and his team of surf nerds have possibly designed the most incredible wave machine on earth. While you have all seen him riding it, below is what happens when others get to surf the “Perfect Wave”.

Skim boarding has been around for years, but it is the casual ease with which this guy at the Wedge rides his like a surfboard that may give some indication of where board design wants to go…

Catch Surf also have been around for a while, but it takes a guy like Ricky Basnett, surfing a finless version at Supertubes to show you the real possibilities. Soft like a booger, no fins and simply flying down the line.

Billabong Junior Series fires on Day 1 in Jbay 2015

To be honest I was a little bleak we were on at the same time as the Jbay Open yesterday, but that feeling dissipated real fast as the Under 16 and Junior Boys heats took to the water at Magnatubes in Jbay and the level of surfing went through the roof! Top junior surfers like Matti Mcgilivray and Dylan Lightfoot battled with international super juniors like Seth Moniz and Griffin Colapinto. Matti landing a hail mary air in his quarter final to get a 10 point ride and Griffin getting the first perfect 10 of the event in his Round 1 heat. Check out the video and be impressed! Seriously I reckon you would have been more entertained at the Junior event than at the main event at Supertubes.

Tom Curren talks Style, Competitive Surfing and Jbay

The man is a legend! He redefined performance at Supertubes on his first wave ever at the point and when he paddled out for his ASP Heritage heat against Occy, he showed the World once again how good he is. Arcing turns, drawn out bottom turns and a perfect ten tube ride. It was a huge privilege to get to interview the man who inspired me to surf Jbay as a grom. His thoughts on surfing Jbay and what he thinks of Owen Wright, Matt Wilko, Joel Parkinson and of course Mick Fanning may just change your views on these surfers. So sit back, relax and listen to the master…
