Bromdog’s Risky Business – Watch Now

I watched this film and simply marvelled at how how big Bromdog’s balls actually are! He is not afraid to go over the ledge in big waves and thus this short film deserves your time…

Step out of your comfort zone; explore new places, meet new people and throw all caution to the wind – you never know where you’ll land up! Risky Business is all about putting yourself out there, and the rewards found at the end of the road less travelled.

Risky Business captures the journey of South African surfer Matt Bromley and filmer Guy Macindoe while they travel to some of the riskier places on earth in their pursuit of surf perfection; from surfing between icebergs in Iceland, to charging massive mountains of water at Jaws in Hawaii, to dropping into near-dry tubes over unforgiving ledges in Africa. The idea was to produce a contemporary surf film, one that showed the risks behind the reward of chasing global swells on a shoe string budget, all the while living every surfers dream for a year between South Africa, Europe, Hawaii, Iceland and Indonesia. The hope is that Risky Business will inspire its audiences to stretch the boundaries of their own capacity, flee their comfort zones, and chase all things bigger and better. Matt and Guy both stretched themselves to make this film a reality; traveling in debt and in fear of not knowing what was around the next swell. All their equipment was stolen in Portugal and they suffered many other hardships along the way, but as Matt reports, “It was worth every moment of risk, and made the journey and experience that much more unforgettable.”

Distance Between Dreams – New Ian Walsh Film

I met Ian Walsh a few years back in Cape Town. He was out for the Dungeons event and ended up on a few missions with myself and the local crew. He struck me as such a nice guy, very relaxed and always keen for a good time. In the interim, he has become one of the leading big wave chargers and on the mega swells at jaws, he is always a standout. I can wait to see his film!

In Distance Between Dreams, the most historic year in big wave surfing comes to life through the eyes of iconic surfer, Ian Walsh, as he sets mind and body in motion to redefine the upper limits of what’s considered ‘rideable.’ With massive El Niño powered swells building across the Pacific, Ian, Shaun, D.K. and Luke Walsh band together in a way that only brothers can to progress surfing to unimaginable heights.

Record Breaking Jaws Surf – 4k Video

On Friday the game was changed at Jaws with one of the biggest and most perfect swells ever ridden in surfing. A huge crowd of chargers took it on, with a solid crew of Safa chargers, like Josh Redman in the mix. (Check him in the video.) Aaron Gold from the North Shore is being credited with possibly the biggest wave ever paddled into. Below is the video, with no music, which is actually super rad as you get a feel for what it is like up on the cliff watching live.

WSL Big Wave Awards – Ride of the Year Nominees

The awards for the most mental surfers on the planet approaches and these are the nominees for the Ride of the Year. While Brad Domke is pretty spectacular on his finless wonder, I think it is a 2 horse race between Shane Dorian, that drop at Puerto is crazy, and Dean Morrison, as if we are remembering it is the “Big Wave” awards and his wave at the Right is absolutely insane. I will be posting the awards nominees during the day and week.

SA Surfers charge Jaws

The internet has been a flutter with images and videos from the 2 days at Jaws, in Maui, last week. With some of the biggest and cleanest wave ever surfed, the South African crew of James Taylor, Mike Schlebach, James Lowe (See above), Matt Bromley, Grant Baker and Josh Redman all got some major coverage. It was Josh though, that absolutely blew up, getting two of the biggest tubes ever ridden out there in one session. Here is one of the better videos of the highlights of those 2 sessions…

Jaws gets Green Light for giant swell heading for Maui

The World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Tour (BWT) is green lighting the Pe’ahi Challenge in Maui, Hawaii for an 8 a.m. start (local time) this Thursday, January 22, 2015. Watch the world’s best big wave surfers riding giant waves live at WorldSurfLeague.com as a projected 30-to-40-foot swell descends upon the region.

Pe’ahi, also referred to as “Jaws”, breaks off the northern coastline of Maui with the ability to produce waves in excess of 60 feet. Although the break came to fame under the guise of tow-in, or jet-ski-assisted, surfing, a dedicated crew of paddle-in surfers have been pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible at the venue in recent years. Thursday’s Pe’ahi Challenge will be the first paddle-in event ever held at the infamous venue.

The 24-man field for the Pe’ahi Challenge will be comprised of the WSL BWT Top 12, led by reigning world champion Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, as well as six WSL BWT wildcards and six local wildcards.

Big Wave Paddle – Season opener at Jaws, November 13, 2013

I am just going to come out and say it. The boys have decided they don’t care if they die. You may feel this is a harsh or sensationalist statement, but its the honest truth. There is no way any human with the built in preservation mechanisms all humans have would willingly surf these waves by paddling. Just look at some of the hidings Shane Dorian takes before he even gets a wave. It should scare the living hell out of you! This was just the first swell of a very long winter in Hawaii and there are the nutters in California too. The big wave crew have got a bee in their bonnets and this madness is not going to stop until someone paddles the biggest wave ever surfed (Thats right, these guys no longer want that wave to be towed, the want to paddle it, even if they have not realised it themselves). Expect to see the world of big wave performance put on its head this next 6 months. All I can say to my mates out there like Grant Twig baker, Greg Long, Ian Walsh, Frank Solomon, Josh Redman and Albie Layer, charge hard, blow minds, but please come back for cold beers afterwards!
