13 Year Old Kai Hall Charges Grab Rail

Young Natural Footer Charges

Kai Hall grew up in South Africa surfing predominantly right waves. He has enjoyed a solid competitive career in the South African junior series, even at his young age and now finds himself living in paradise in Bali.

Bali improves your left surfing

Living in Bali, Kai has had to learn to ride left pits and he has adapted very quickly to riding pig dog. Wearing wetsuits and a helmet for protection from the live coral reef, he is making a name for himself in the islands and all over the world. Kai Hall is possibly the most tubed 13 year old on the planet!

Fountain of Youth – SA surfing flashback!

Fountain of Youth took me back in time!

Wow, almost forgot about this film from Jason Hearn and Duncan Scott. Pretty rad that it came up today when I posted an interview with Travis Logie, Jordy and Wok. This surf film included Travis and many of the surfers either side of their generation. It was also the film that got me booking my trip on the Indies Explorer (Sadly burnt a few years ago) and I had one of the best trips of my life.

About the Film

The surf film “The Fountain of Youth,” which was written, directed, filmed and produced by the duo of filmer Jason Hearn and writer Duncan Scott, encapsulated a highwater mark of that period, as a crew of some of SA’s best surfers stepped aboard the Indies Explorer and gorged themselves on uncrowded, prime-season Mentawai perfection. The surfers included Greg Emslie, Paul Canning, Davey Weare, Travis Logie, Simon Nicholson, Peter Nicholson, Duncan Scott, Dan Redman, Ricky Basnett and Damien Fahrenfort.

Cape Bodyboarders going buck Wild

Cape Town has always had a solid bodyboard crew, who just love to charge big, heaving pits. One of the guys documenting, charging and pushing the crew is, Simon Heale. Over the last few months he has put together a good segment of action from around the land, with some of the Cape’s best talent charging. Check out the video…

Then we have one of my guys from Llandudno, Jaco Loubser. He has always charged, but felt trapped in his corporate existence, so he he packed up and hit the road to Indonesia and the Philippines, went a little feral, scored insane waves and somehow managed to document it all. Check his video…

Now go out there and charge!

A real Hawaiian Princess – Meet Kelia Moniz

As a surfer we all know our history and that of the Hawaiian Islands and how the royalty of that island change started surfing. I think it is safe to say that we have all imagined meeting an Hawaiian princess and watching her magically transform the waves into a wonderland of the imagination. The amazing thing, is that Hawaiian Princess is real and her name is, Kelia Moniz. Now this may just be my recent induction into the world of Longboarding, but how amazing is this video and how graceful does Kelia look in the water?

Kelia ‘Sister’ Moniz is the epitome of effortless style and grace. Our favorite lady logger had mastered the art of hanging ten at an early age. With equal parts happiness and humility, the multi-talented Hawaiian has become one of the most versatile surfers, notching up back to back 2012 and 2013 World Titles.

Benji Brand & Perfect Mentawai Leftovers

Benji Brand lives on two continents, hailing from South Africa, but spending half his life on the North Shore of Hawaii. Thus, it was no surprise to see him popping up on this trip to the Mentawais for Surfing Magazine with the new breed of Hawaiian rippers, Isaiah Moniz, Josh Moniz, Seth Moniz, and Kaulana Apo. The boys scored a number of spots going mental and the level of surfing is absolutely crazy! Sit back and be jealous…

Top 5 Web Surf Videos of 2014

With the Surfer Poll having just gone down and most sites picking their highlights for the year, I thought I would give you guys my picks for the best web surf videos over this year. There have been some absolute bangers, some that follow the old music and surf formula and the newer arty ones that mix and match between old french people smoking and John John busting. My criteria is simple, good music, great editing and surfing that gets me pumped to go session!

Before I get into the Top 5, one video worth watching in number 6 is this one, Clay on Clay by Surfing Mag. Unleashing Clay Marzo and Matt Meola on West Oz was a great idea. Maybe a little to many left handers, but the surfing and footage are insane.

Number 5 – LNF: Diamond of the Desert
With the focus on just the one spot, this video still inspires and fills with a sense of wonder. Having one of the longest tube sequences ever filmed also helps, with Koa Smith the standout.

Number 4 – Enjoy
John John Florence and filmer, Blake Kueny, have made some memorable web videos. This one definitely went arty on us, but the surfing footage and the feeling of being in France created by Blake definitely got me amped to go surf and eat baguettes.

Number 3 – The Getaway
Jordy Smith has been having a banger year and he backed it up with this sweet video shot in Mozambique. Huge gaffs, big punts and long tubes in paradise make this video a keeper.

Number 2 – Cheese 2
Noa Deane has just found himself in the cuck after some rather bad behaviour at the Surfer Poll Awards, but he still won the AI award and this video won best web video. There is a reason why, he rips and the video is shot so well with insane tunes. I almost made it number 1.

Number 1 – Dirty Dozen
Pumping track, huge moves and of course Mr Dane Reynolds. This is everything you need in a surf short and its simplicity is the winning factor. Short, sharp and to the point, make this video my winner for 2014. These are twelve of my best clips of Dane Reynolds. Filmed in Sumbawa, Japan, Hawaii, and California from 2011 – 2013, for various Marine Layer Productions projects such as Excerpt, LOADED, and Kai Neville’s Dear Suburbia.

So thats my web surf video choices for 2014. Let me know your thoughts and if I missed any good ones?
