Welcome to Wakeskating

My first article of the new year and I must say I am stoked that it is about wakeskating and this movie.

Firstly, because I have always enjoyed watching wakeskating and secondly, because it features one of my favorite South African athletes, Matti Buys.

If you have not had a look at wake skating before, you may feel it is a hybrid child of wake boarding, skateboard and a wet t-shirt competition, which is not far off. It became popular once the urban kids starting riding cable parks and left the bindings off to be able to start doing skate tricks on the rails and jumps.

Since then it has grown at a rapid rate and now, especially with the aid of winch cables, has moved out into the great outdoors and urban water areas of the world. We also have a a pretty big crew in South Africa with a couple of wake parks you can go ride in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Ballito.

Istudiomo takes you into the heart of the wakeskating movement, featuring some of the world’s top riders and both crazy urban environments, as well as majestic and wild locations.

The gents have made the film free to view in order to help raise awareness of the sport and to attract new blood to the scene, something I can really respect. If you do enjoy the movie go and show some love on their website and you can make a donation – Istudiomo

Bromdog’s Risky Business – Watch Now

I watched this film and simply marvelled at how how big Bromdog’s balls actually are! He is not afraid to go over the ledge in big waves and thus this short film deserves your time…

Step out of your comfort zone; explore new places, meet new people and throw all caution to the wind – you never know where you’ll land up! Risky Business is all about putting yourself out there, and the rewards found at the end of the road less travelled.

Risky Business captures the journey of South African surfer Matt Bromley and filmer Guy Macindoe while they travel to some of the riskier places on earth in their pursuit of surf perfection; from surfing between icebergs in Iceland, to charging massive mountains of water at Jaws in Hawaii, to dropping into near-dry tubes over unforgiving ledges in Africa. The idea was to produce a contemporary surf film, one that showed the risks behind the reward of chasing global swells on a shoe string budget, all the while living every surfers dream for a year between South Africa, Europe, Hawaii, Iceland and Indonesia. The hope is that Risky Business will inspire its audiences to stretch the boundaries of their own capacity, flee their comfort zones, and chase all things bigger and better. Matt and Guy both stretched themselves to make this film a reality; traveling in debt and in fear of not knowing what was around the next swell. All their equipment was stolen in Portugal and they suffered many other hardships along the way, but as Matt reports, “It was worth every moment of risk, and made the journey and experience that much more unforgettable.”

Goose bump inducing Downhill Skate Movie – And it’s Free!

The crew at Arbor have a solid track record of great movies, whether Snowboarding or Downhill Skating. So I was pretty dam excited to watch their latest Downhill piece, Grade.

Caliber Truck Co. and Arbor Skateboards, in association with Blood Orange, present GRADE; a downhill/freeride full-length film chronicling a year of travel with our top team riders. Tag along with James Kelly, Liam Morgan, Tyler Howell, Brandon Tissen, and Jordan Riachi as they travel to some of the most critical and challenging roads in the world. GRADE was filmed on location in Mexico, Hawaii, Northern Sierras, Laguna Beach, Australia, and Switzerland.

There are moments watching this film that I was literally breathing hard and clutching the armrests on my chair. You can almost feel the adrenaline shooting through the riders veins with every wobble and vehicle drive by. I highly recommend watching it!

Danny MacAskill’s Epeceun – The master of Trials is back!

I have been hanging for the new video to drop from Danny MacAskill and its finally here. So go make yourself some popcorn, pour a bevvy and sit back and relax for 2 seconds before jumping up in awe at the stunts this guy does. Shot in a town in Argentina of the same name, which flooded in the 80’s and now 20 years later it has risen as a ghost town. Eary, strange and beautiful landscapes are created for the master to ride trial on! So bloody good!

I got to watch the film at the premier in Durban and it was sick! Great footage, funky editing as we expect from Volcom movies and of course some sick tunes. I kinda enjoy the fact that it moves between the different sports too, with snowboarding, skate and surf on the menu. Keeps it fresh. The Cape Town Tattoo Expo 2014 – Win an Epic Prize Pack

Every year the best and most eccentric of the World’s tattoo artists make their way to our city, Cape Town, to put on a show of epic proportions. For those with ink already its an opportunity to see the best in the business and perhaps add to their collections, for those with clean skin like myself its an incredible journey into the artistic world of skin art, with some great parties thrown in for good measure. The Friday Mix – Mental Java Bodyboard, Josh Pall Skating & Bromdog ripping!

Time for another epic Friday Mix of action sports video from the week. I have been bombarded with good edits this week and it was tough choosing my three favorites, but these are them.

First off we go down to Java, Indonesia, with bodyboarder Joshua Garner and the Paradise Paradox. Deep and super thick pits with mental air game and a good backstory make this a winner. I am pretty sure most Bodyboarders will be booking tickets to Java soon…

Next up we go skating for a day round Sydney, with Josh Pall. Super relaxed and and clearly in an area he skates plenty, you can but help appreciate this video shot on a RED.

Lastly we go round the planet with Cape Town charger, Matt Bromley, as he throws himself into big pits and perfect waves. Edited by Steven Michelson.

At first I was like, how did they do this? Is it green screen? Then I realised these guys actually were skiing in the forest. Pretty dam surreal piece of work I must say. Now I wanna watch the whole movie.
