Billabong Junior Series fires on Day 1 in Jbay 2015

To be honest I was a little bleak we were on at the same time as the Jbay Open yesterday, but that feeling dissipated real fast as the Under 16 and Junior Boys heats took to the water at Magnatubes in Jbay and the level of surfing went through the roof! Top junior surfers like Matti Mcgilivray and Dylan Lightfoot battled with international super juniors like Seth Moniz and Griffin Colapinto. Matti landing a hail mary air in his quarter final to get a 10 point ride and Griffin getting the first perfect 10 of the event in his Round 1 heat. Check out the video and be impressed! Seriously I reckon you would have been more entertained at the Junior event than at the main event at Supertubes.

The Ballito Pro 2015 – Ladies Finals & the Trials

We had an action packed day 1 down at the Ballito Pro with both the mens trials and the ladies competition surfing to completion. In the trials we saw Brazilian domination with Roberto Santos taking the win from Flavio Nakajima, who both got wildcards into the main event. In the ladies it was Nikita Robb taking the win from Faye Zoetmulder in the final and walking home with a R10’000 payday. We also caught up with top junior surfer, Ntando Msibi and ladies competitor, Tarry Chudleigh. This insert was broadcast on the Expresso Show on SABC 3.

X Games Day 1 – Snowboard Halfpipe Insanity

Ok so the first day of X Games Aspen is behind us and what a day it was. There was snowmobile action, Ski Slopestyle, Ski Halfpipe and probably the most anticipated event of the year, the men’s Snowboard Pipe. All eyes were on the return of the flying tomato, Shaun White, but it was the youngsters who held him back and he finished in 3rd. Taka Hiraoka from japan busted some solid tricks with incredible elevation to secure silver. Repeating his victory from last year, it was Danny Davis winning the Gold. I loved Danny’s run, great mix of old and new and especially the monster McTwist to start.

Crazy First Day at the Hurley Pro Trestles

In what was to become a day of upsets, with both Kelly Slater and Gabriel Medina losing to the wildcards, it was Jordy Smith and Owen Wright who put on clinics, in how to score big at Trestles. The waves were great, but there did seem to0 be a bit of a wobble and it claimed many a rail! Round 2 is as stacked as we have ever seen it with Kelly, Gabs, Taj, Kolohe, Kerr and Julian Wilson all in the round. Should make for some explosive surfing come day 2.

Jordy Smith schools the Pro Tour on Day 1 at the Jbay Open

Thats right, Jordy Smith schooled the pro tour! Two high 9’s in 4 minutes, then snapped a leash and did the run around, while the poor goofy footers in his heat anxiously tried to compete while in combo land. Jordy popped back into the lineup and promptly caught the wave of the day, absolutely destroyed it and got a perfect 10. He clearly wants to defend his title at Jbay.

Other standouts living in Jordy’s rather large shadow, were Josh Kerr ripping and pulling the first Kerupt Flip at Jbay, Kai Otton with one of the best tubes of the day taking out Parko and Mick Fanning. Local wildcard, Dylan Lightfoot surfed super well against Kelly Slater in Round 1 and Gabriel Medina in Round 2. He did not get through, but certainly did not embarrass himself either. The experience of surfing against these guys will have been an invaluable learning experience for the young man.

Mr Price Pro Day 1 #ActionUpdate

A great first day at Ballito for the Mr Price Pro with some tubes in the morning and super fun bowls through the day. Biggest disappointment was Beyrick de Vries getting knocked out on a priority interference, after he dominated his heat, which was the highest scoring heat of the day! South Africans through to Round 2 were Jordy Smith, Travis Logie and young gun, Davey van Zyl. Check out all the action…
