Winter XGames 2019 Insanity

Every Year Winter XGames just gets bigger

From the start XGames has been all about pushing the boundaries of action sports in a competition format. This year, watching the main events, live for once thanks to the Youtube broadcasts, I was once again blown away by the level of riding across the event. Hands down my favourite event was the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle, where Mark McMorris once again came from way down the field to post an insane last run and win his 8th Gold Medal. (See the full Slopestyle broadcast below.)

The action officially kicked off at X Games Aspen 2019 with Monster Energy athletes bringing home some new hardware! Cassie Sharpe – Women’s Ski SuperPipe, GOLD, David Wise – Men’s Ski SuperPipe, SILVER and Jamie Anderson competing in the Women’s Snowboard Big Air.

Watch the full broadcasts of my Favourite Events

All the action was red hot, but there were a few that stood out! Here are my favourites for you to watch.

Chris Bertish to SUP across the Atlantic – The SUP Crossing

There are so many things I could use to describe Chris Bertish to you. But I think the most important one is that is he is driven – not just to succeed at whatever he does, but to excel for both himself and others. To push the boundaries and show us whats actually possible. After years of supporting charities, charging monster waves and breaking records, Chris now plans on achieving his life long goal of crossing the Atlantic Ocean… on a SUP. When I first heard of this plan I have to honestly say I did not think it was possible, but Chris Bertish does not understand impossible. Check out the video and get involved, supporting some amazing causes!

3 Videos that may change how we surf!

One of the most oft spoken about topics for many years in surfing has been, where are we going? What is the next big thing in surfing? How will our sport progress?

Below are three short videos that will go some way to answering that question. Kelly Slater and his team of surf nerds have possibly designed the most incredible wave machine on earth. While you have all seen him riding it, below is what happens when others get to surf the “Perfect Wave”.

Skim boarding has been around for years, but it is the casual ease with which this guy at the Wedge rides his like a surfboard that may give some indication of where board design wants to go…

Catch Surf also have been around for a while, but it takes a guy like Ricky Basnett, surfing a finless version at Supertubes to show you the real possibilities. Soft like a booger, no fins and simply flying down the line.

Urban Snowmobiling in Saint Paul | Levi LaVallee

Levi LaVallee is the poster child for dynamite comes in small packages. I met him back at X Games in LA a few years ago and the guy is short, full of life and loves a good party. On top of all that he rides a snowmobile like a man possessed! Check out his latest web video where he cruises the streets of his home town, its pretty dam ridiculous.

Some people see the world as a playground, where anything and everything can and will be a shreddable obstacle. As a kid growing up in Minnesota, Levi LaVallee looked at his state’s capital Saint Paul like a ripe fruit, begging to be plucked…and ripped to shreds on his snowmobile. A land of opportunity that only he could see, it was his mission to take that city over on his trusty sled. Now, he’s done it.

Snowboard Heaven – Japan Snow – The Search for Perfection in 4K

If like me, you are sitting in a boiling hot South Africa and dreaming of deep Pow and colder climes, you might not want to watch this video. Filled with the most glorious powder conditions you could ever dream of, it has me pining for some snowboarding action.

Explore Japan with GoPro athletes John Jackson and Chris Benchetler as they seek to find a moment of perfection in the snow. Follow the journey from the bustling city of Tokyo, to the rural beauty in Hakuba, and finally to the wintery north island of Hokkaido as they find endless fields of untracked powder.

Radical Snowmobile Action – crazy footage to a great track

I guess snowmobile is quite the exotic past time to us South Africans. We simply just have no comprehension of what it is about. Watching this edit makes me wanna try it though. Incredible footage, marvellous edit and a great track. Pretty sure you will really enjoy watching it.

Urban Mountain Bike Madness in Peru

Adventurer/freeride legend Aaron Chase hit the streets of Cusco, Peru to ride some of the burliest — and dare we say sketchiest, urban downhill caught on video. Watch as he follows Red Bull Rampage rider Chris Van Dan as they bomb down back alleys, over makeshift wall rides and down narrow, high-speed stairs — all in the urban confines of the South American city.

Mind bending skating at the Vans Pool Party 2015 Finals

The biggest names in bowl skating from young to ancient, go absolutely bonkers in this insane bowl!

Broken boards equals broken dreams. Chris Russell had it in the bag but one too many hang-ups enabled Tom Schaar to spin his way to the top. Meanwhile, Pedro Barros stole the show with a death defying NBD. 10 years of the Pool Party and this was the best one yet!

Barrel to Oblivion with Ollie O’Flaherty at Mullaghmore

The entries for the XXL Surf Awards keep flowing in and this one for Wipeout of the Year really caught my eye. First of all the conditions are horrendous, with howling offshore winds, freezing cold and pouring rain and then you go and get swallowed by a wave like this. Think i will stick to the perfect 4-5ft days haha.

Ollie’ O’Flaherty (Lahinch, County Clare, Ireland) pulls into the tube and hits the eject button at Mullaghmore Head, Ireland on January 20, 2015. Video by Fionn Rogers. An entry in the Wipeout of the Year category of the 2015 XXL Big Wave Awards.
