Incredible insight into Great White behaviour – REMUS SharkCam

This video absolutely blows my mind. It shows that once a Great White has decided on attack, firstly you will not see it coming and secondly there is very little you can do. When the sharks are not in attack mode and just being inquisitive or territorial, there are slower approaches, gentle nudges and very little use of the mouth and teeth. While my absolute worst nightmare, I cannot help but be fascinated by these giant hunters who are the masters of their domain. Also keep an eye out for the teeth raining away while the shark is biting the camera, its absolutely unreal.

In 2013, a team from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution took a specially equipped REMUS “SharkCam” underwater vehicle to Guadalupe Island in Mexico to film great white sharks in the wild. They captured more than they bargained for.

The Friday Mix – Great White encounter spearfishing, Real Snow Backcountry & Chippa Wilson Surfs

Welcome to your Friday mix and while interest is on new wetsuits to deter sharks, check out this close encounter with a 5m Great White off of Port Elizabeth. I ran a video last year of Eugene van Wyngaardt fending off a 3m Shark. Seems he decided to have an encounter with a bigger one. You can actually see the spear point pushing in her skin as he fends her off. Scary stuff!

Next up its almost time for Xgames LA and this year they have a new Real Snow contest. Check out the Real Snow Backcountry competition teaser with some of the world’s best big mountain destroyers! Then get online and watch and vote for your favorite!

Lastly check out the latest offering from free surfing phenomenon, Chippa Wilson. Some serious steez on this kid.

Enjoy your weekend!

Shark deterrent wetsuits developed in Australia

Ok, as surfers we are always keen on discovering new ways to improve our chances of not ending up as food for the oldest predator in the ocean. A whole bunch of different anti-shark systems have popped up over the last few years and this is the latest one. Check out the video (I can’t say it overwhelmingly impressed me and I would definitely like to see the actual wetsuits being tested. That shark was awfully close to the bait box and a flying Great White would still probably have torn it apart!) But, lets see what they show us next…

World-leading shark scientists at the University of Western Australia now understand exactly how sharks see. In collaboration with the university, SAMS has translated the scientific data into a range of patented shark deterrent and repellent wetsuits, along with other products now available online. Test footage was captured by National Geographic.
