Big call you may say, but if you have watched top Bmx competition for the last few years, you will agree with me. Known as much for his huge, tweaked out tricks, as for that infectious smile always plastered on his dial. For the podcast we took a look at why he has such a happy outlook on life and why Bmx makes him so happy. A big reason he is on the Monster Energy, Mongoose and Vans A teams.
Lockdown Mind Games
Going from riding Bmx every day, which he still does, albeit in the parking garage, whether park or street – the lockdown has seriously impacted on Kevin‘s life. While surfers can still go ride the waves in California, all skate and bmx parks are closed. Good time to be Pat Casey with the most epic backyard setup, but KP in lockdown at his apartment.
Kevin Peraza loves South Africa
Well he does, he was about to board a plane to SA for Ultimate X, then the lockdown was initiated and he still has the tickets. His first few trips were to Cape Town and the last 2 have been to Sun City. (KP makes a very good Game Drive guide btw) Check out the seal diving trip we chat about below. He reckons as soon as travel allowed, he is coming back to SA!
I wanted something spectacular to start the year off on the blog and my man, Murray Loubser, came with the heat. Not only has he been featured in the new Odyssey Bmx film, At Ease, but he got the final segment (We all know the final segment is the most NB segment!)
I had a quick chat to him about the project and upcoming plans, such as Ultimate X at Sun City, next month. You an listen to the Podcast below…

Thats right, the best Bmx stars in the world, including Murray Loubser, will all be competing at Ultimate X at Sun City. I will have more interviews with some of the guys coming out soon! For more information on the event, check out their Facebook Page!
Arguably the sickest Dirt jump event on the planet, this year’s edition of The Night Harvest delivered no shortage of the fruits.
Some of our most notorious BMX generals were in town and the trails were perfectly primed in front of the picturesque backdrop of the Hout Bay mountains. The scenery around Cape Town is no joke and the level of riding this year definitely wasn’t either. You do the math, 1 prime set of jumps, coupled with chargers like the Pat Casey, Brock Horneman, Mike Varga, Leandro Moreira and more, the ever supportive Cape Town crowd were in for a treat.
Jam Session Rules
As the sun started to set, the bikes made their way up the roll in tower. Making for an ideal golden hour practice session, The Night Harvest runs a little different to most contests, with a jam session format, making it way more ideal for the riders to work on those dream runs. Which makes the usually competitive vibe much more conducive for bringing out the best riding possible.
Leandro Moreira – 3rd Place BMX
The Brazilian, no stranger to this kind of terrain. Went at least 3ft higher than anyone on the jumps. Bringing his signature bag of tricks which included cranked turndown flips, flip double whips, triple whips and the hugest dumped 3’s in the game. Always a crowd favourite at The Night Harvest, clearly Leandro was favoured with the judges too.
Mike Varga – 2nd Place BMX
Mike Varga was on fire, fresh off a long airport transit. The Canadian proceeded to annihilate the course with all the tech wizardry and burly combos you’d need an action replay to process. Varga wasn’t just happy with dominating the line, he then proceeded to icepick bar the wall ride at the bottom of the course which was a first for the event!
Pat Casey – 1st Place BMX
Pat Casey – “The Night Harvest is always one of my favourite events of the year, it’s been awesome riding with all the boys and I was hyped to take to win again, also a huge surprise was being handed an invite to this year’s Battle of Hastings as a captain this year.” The SoCal native completely destroyed the jumps every time he dropped in for the well-deserved W.
Monster Army Shredders
There was a strong contingency of Monster Army shredders in town, including Brock Horneman, Bryce Tryon and Alec Danelutti brought their A-game and gave the Monster Energy top dogs a run for their money. Brock ended the event in a close 4th place, sending all the hammers in his artillery, flip triple bars and a plethora of mind-blowing runs, the Aussie is sure to be on the podium more regularly in the near future.
Night Harvest MTB
In the MTB division, there was a solid line up of locals with a few international rippers including Swedish wunderkind Lukas Skiold and big air extraordinaire Matt Macduff up against Cape Town’s very own Justin Novella, local DH Free-racer Theo Erlangson and up and comer Cornel Swanepoel, all completely sending it for a chance to land on the podium.
In 3rd place came Czech dirt jump veteran Tomas Zedja who had the line waxed from top to bottom with a mix of classic tricks. In 2nd place, Matt Macduff came in hot from a week in Barcelona and treated the crowd to a selection of heaters which included folded 360 tables, massive flip whip’s and even gave a solid go at some flat 720’s during the Best Trick jam. Macduff – “Honestly, I’m so stoked to be able to ride on the level I was on before my big crash on the loop 2 years back. Everyone killed it. I wasn’t even expecting to be on the podium, I just went out and had fun with the crew, I’m super grateful to be back on this level.”
In the 1st place spot, experience points paid off here with Lukas Skiold and his mathematical precision on everything he does, taking the clear win in the class. “So stoked to be out in SA again after 2 years after coming out and winning Best Trick, so I was so hyped to come back and push even harder. The jumps were amazing. I tried my hardest to land a cash-roll bar in the Best Trick, I’m going to go back to the drawing board on that and give it another go in a contest real soon.”
As is the norm the world’s best X athletes did not dissapoint this last week in Minneapolis. There were some incredible performances during Xgames 2018.
Lets start with skateboarding and Nyjah Huston. The already 7 times Gold medal winner put in a flawless performance to take home the Gold. It has been a while since his last win and was amazing to see Nyjah back to his best.
In the ladies, I was super impressed with Skateboard Park Gold winner, Brighton Zeuner. She pushed the levels of ladies park riding with a pretty impeccable run.
In men’s Park, Alex Sorgente blew minds with his variety and combinations in the park, fighting off big names like Alex Barros to take Gold.
In the Bmx it was a mad day of riding, with the boys pushing the limits of the sport. After seeing some of these guys at Ultimate X earlier this year, I was pumped to see some of the guys were out here, dominating at XGames.
In the dirt it was Brandon Loupos with an astounding run for Gold. He had a backflip into the double backflip, then a cash rollto triple tailwhip and then the big finish of a flare doible tailwhip.
Logan Martin was one of the guys who really impressed me in SA. We did not get to see him in heavy bowl sections though, where he blew up at Bmx Park at Xgames.
James Foster stepped up the game in the Bmx Big Air with a massive superman over the jump to the first Quadruple Tailwhip in the competition.
In the FMX the levels keep just going up, though how I just dont know. Jackson “Jacko” Strong took gold in the Fmx Best Trick with a Doube frontflip no hander.
When you open your Fmx Freestyle run with a double backflip no hander, you are going for Gold. The French heavyweight, Tom Pages smashed his second run for Gold.
The inaugural Nitro World Games took place July 16 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Travis Pastrana changed the game so many times it only made sense that his dream event would do the same thing. There were 32 never before done tricks at the Nitro Games this weekend, from the likes of winners Colton Walker,Levi Sherwood, Elliot Sloan, Gregg Duffy and with the new formats and judging system we may just see even more very soon. What will be especially interesting is how this will effect the more staple events such as X games and Dew Tour. Of course some of the events had mostly Nitro Circus athletes, who are the only people able to hit the giant ramps with specially modified landings, but it dont change the fact that the guys made history! Check out the winning runs below and I have also put the entire event stream up for you guys. Make some popcorn, gran a cold one and blow your mind!
On a side note, it is very interesting to see the outcry online over why they did not show the scooter and inline runs. While both are almost non-existent in SA, scooter has one of the biggest fan bases in the USA. On top of this it was a scooter athlete, Ryan Williams, who won the BMX best trick with a never before seen trick!
When I saw the lineup of BMX stars coming out to South Africa for the Ultimate X event, I was pretty impressed. I also knew that I would have to show them a good time and get them out of their comfort zone. Enter the 2 Oceans Aquarium and Adrenalised Diving. With help from Appventure we organised that Daniel Dhers, Allasandro Barbero, Tom Isted and Kenneth Tancio would do their resort courses for diving and enter the Predator Tank at the 2 Oceans Aquarium, while myself and the team at Adrenalised Diving and Waterfront Charters took the wild bunch of Catfish, Greg Ilingworth, Panos Manaros, Pat Casey, Declan Brooks, Brock Horneman and Kevin Peraza diving with seals. We also got to see two species of dolphins and other aquatic life. All in all another great day in Africa, watch the video here…
Having the best BMX crew in the world in Cape Town last week, I had to take them out of their comfort zones! So while some went diving with Seals with Adrenalised Diving the rest went diving in the Predator tank at the Two Oceans Aquarium – with AppVenture SportsView Online and Ultimate X – Action Sports FestZack Yankush Daniel Dhers Pat Casey BMX Kenneth Tencio "pollis" Brock Horneman Declan Brooks Kevin Peraza Tom Isted Greg Illingworth Anas Mansour
The 2016 Night Harvest went mental! The huge crowd were entertained by some of SA’s and the planet’s best riders and the level was through the roof. Watch the video and be sad if you were not there for the live experience.
With Ultimate X 2016 just over a month away and the athlete list announced already, I thought it would be a great idea to feature one of the International athletes coming out each Wednesday. As the host of the event I want to introduce you to some of the insane riders heading our way. The BMX field is looking off the charts with greats like Kevin Kalkoff, Pat Casey and Daniel Dhers on the list, not to mention our own Greg Illingworth, but today we feature last year’s standout rider, Kevin Peraza, from Mexico. This guy brings a whole new bag of tricks to the table and in his latest video you get to see just a pinch of his bag of tricks.
While most riders make the move to Southern California, Kevin is happiest at home in Tucson surrounded by family and friends. For the last year he has ridden his local spots, visualising new lines and tricks on the familiar ramps. When it came time to put it on camera Kevin was unstoppable. Whether it was coming up with a way to create green fire, building a massive wall ride or pulling never been done tricks, when Kevin sets his mind to something he always gets what he wants.
We wait all year for the X Games and then like a blur it is all over. Over the weekend the world’s best x athletes once again raised the level of the sports we love to watch and stoked out everyone who was up watching. For those who missed out, or for those who just want to feel the stoke again, here are my top 10 moments from X Games Austin 2015.
First up it’s my tenth spot pick and it goes to Nate Adams taking Gold in the Moto X Speed and Style. Bilko and Nate were going at it hammer and tongs and Bilko probably had him on style, but then he fell and that was that.
In ninth spot it is the ever green Bob Burnquist, who won skate big air and then went on to win the Gold in Big Air Doubles along with Morgan Wade. A new event, the crowd really enjoyed.
Up next in eighth spot, Pierre-Luc Gagnon once again dominated Skate Vert with a stylish and controlled run. PLG knows how to handle his business.
Kyle Baldock once again dominated the BMX Dirt with a super tricked out final run ending in his signature, giant front flip and makes seventh on my list.
In sixth place, it was great to see Ryan Sheckler back at X games where it all began. He skated some solid runs and ended up getting silver in Skate Street.
In 5th place its the ladies, well more specifically Alexis Sablone, with her incredible run to take Gold in the Woman’s Skate Street. Incredible to see how the level in the ladies has just gone through the roof. Alexis was doing tricks that none of the guys were.
Curren Caples had to pull out everything he had to finally put an end to the Pedro Barros domination of Skate Park. This was one of the upsets of the X games.
In Third place we head over to the Mega Ramp and a last ditch effort by Colton Satterfield to win Gold. No hand 720 Cork to double flare on the Quarter made cleanly was guaranteed to win the Gold.
In second place we stick with BMX and Daniel Sandoval going absolutely mental in BMX Park. I had to watch this run a couple of times just to make sense of how many tricks he pulled in this run.
There can only be one number one spot though and that must go to the one and only, Nyjah Huston. Watch this run a couple of times, you simply cannot find and blemishes or mistakes. It is absolutely flawless and deserving not only of the X Games Gold, but my top spot for 2015.
Every year in mid summer a plethora of Bmx stars from around the World head for Cape Town due to the many big riding events happening close to each other. This year our local hero, Greg Illingworth, brought his fellow Mongoose team mates along for a trip and they quite literally slayed the local Cape Spots. I got to take them down to the secret bowl and watch Greg slay that which was pretty incredible live. So sit back, relax and watch some Bmx carnage as riders Kevin Peraza, Paul Ryan, Greg Illingworth and Stu Loundon slay the Cape…
